Project Manager
Compensation: $135,000-$160,000 base salary + bonus
Full-Time | Houston, TX
Company Overview
Our client is a growing building materials and industrial distribution company backed by a larger international organization. The company is expanding its U.S. footprint through new facilities, terminal infrastructure, logistics assets, and capital projects that support long-term growth across multiple markets.
This is an opportunity to join a high-performing internal projects team that plays a direct role in building and expanding the company’s operational platform.
Team Overview
The Projects Team functions as the company's in-house engineering, procurement, and construction group. The team manages capital projects across the U.S., including industrial terminals, rail and barge infrastructure, storage expansions, material handling systems, and facility improvements.
The team is transitioning from a small, highly hands-on group into a more structured organization with dedicated engineering, procurement, project controls, and construction responsibilities. As the company continues to grow, they need an experienced Project Manager who can integrate these functions, create discipline around execution, and ensure each functional owner delivers against the overall project plan.
Position Overview
The Project Manager will serve as the quarterback for multidisciplinary industrial construction and capital projects from planning through execution, startup, and commissioning. This person will own overall project performance by coordinating engineering, procurement, project controls, construction, contractors, vendors, operations, and other stakeholders around a unified scope, schedule, budget, and execution plan.
This is not a general commercial construction project management role or a discipline-specific design position. The right candidate will bring experience managing projects in cement, aggregates, mining, material handling, mineral processing, powdered bulk solids, terminals, heavy industrial facilities, or a closely related environment. Candidates from oil and gas, refining, chemical, or other heavy industrial environments may also be considered if they have led multidisciplinary projects and understand how engineering, procurement, construction, startup, and commissioning fit together.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned, decisive project leader who can create urgency, hold cross-functional team members accountable without relying on formal authority, and keep deliverables moving. This person should be firm and no-nonsense when deadlines are at risk while remaining respectful, collaborative, low-ego, and capable of coaching less experienced team members.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and manage the full project life cycle for industrial capital projects, including planning, scope development, budgeting, scheduling, engineering, procurement, construction, startup, and commissioning.
- Serve as the central point of project coordination and maintain alignment across scope, schedule, budget, cost control, risk, reporting, documentation, and project controls.
- Develop clear execution plans, milestones, responsibilities, and decision deadlines so each project function understands what is required and when it must be delivered.
- Coordinate with Engineering Leads to establish design milestones, track deliverables, close information gaps, and ensure technical decisions are made in time to support procurement and construction. The Project Manager will drive the process but will not serve as the technical authority for every engineering discipline.
- Coordinate closely with the Procurement Lead to ensure bid packages, vendor selections, purchase decisions, long-lead equipment, and procurement milestones align with the project schedule and receive required engineering information on time.
- Coordinate contractors, vendors, field teams, operations, maintenance, and internal stakeholders through construction, startup, and commissioning while maintaining safety, quality, functionality, and maintainability standards.
- Hold cross-functional stakeholders accountable for commitments and deadlines, address missed deliverables directly, and escalate or resolve dependencies before they affect overall project performance.
- Review project schedules, budgets, change orders, engineering and contractor deliverables, risk items, and technical documentation to identify gaps and drive timely action.
- Prepare and present regular project status reports covering progress, budget, schedule, risks, decisions, dependencies, and key action items.
- Mentor and coach project engineers or junior team members while reinforcing clear expectations, ownership, and strong project-management discipline.
- Help strengthen project processes, operating rhythms, and accountability practices as the Projects Team grows from a generalist model into a more specialized organization.
- Maintain an active field presence, ask informed questions, identify emerging issues, and support problem solving when needed while keeping primary ownership focused on overall project leadership and integration.
Must-Have Qualifications
- Direct project management experience in industrial construction, heavy industrial facilities, or capital projects.
- Experience in cement, aggregates, mining, material handling, mineral processing, powdered bulk solids, terminals, or similar industrial environments is strongly preferred.
- Candidates from oil and gas, refining, chemical, power, or other heavy industrial environments may be considered if they have broad project ownership and experience leading multidisciplinary project teams.
- Candidates coming only from residential, commercial office interiors, homebuilding, or light commercial construction will not be a fit unless they also have meaningful industrial project experience.
- Strong command of scope management, scheduling, budgeting, cost control, risk management, project controls, contractor coordination, reporting, and documentation.
- Demonstrated understanding of the full project life cycle and the sequencing and information flow among engineering, procurement, construction, startup, and commissioning.
- Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary, cross-functional project teams and drive performance across specialized functions without personally owning every technical or procurement task.
- Demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority, establish clear expectations, and hold engineers, procurement partners, contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders accountable to deadlines.
- Strong communication and interpersonal judgment, including the ability to have difficult conversations, challenge missed commitments, create urgency, and maintain productive working relationships.
- Self-starter mentality with the confidence to make decisions, take ownership, manage ambiguity, and operate without constant direction.
- Ability to mentor and coach less experienced team members while working effectively with seasoned technical and field personnel.
- Willingness to work in a fast-paced, high-accountability environment where project demands may occasionally extend beyond a traditional 9-to-5 schedule.
- High attention to detail, strong follow-through, and the discipline to identify slippage early and drive issues to resolution.
- Low-ego leadership style that combines firmness, professionalism, collaboration, integrity, and accountability.
Preferred Qualifications
- 8+ years of project management experience in industrial construction or capital projects. Candidates with 10+ years of progressively responsible experience independently leading multidisciplinary projects are strongly preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or a related technical field. An engineering background or strong engineering intuition is highly preferred, although the Project Manager is not expected to be the technical authority for every discipline.
- PMP certification preferred. Candidates without a PMP may still be considered if they demonstrate strong, structured project-management discipline.
- Professional Engineer license is a plus, but not required.
- Experience within a larger or more mature project organization and the ability to help implement practical processes, operating standards, and accountability systems in a growing team.
- Experience with multidisciplinary scopes, including civil, structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, geotechnical, surveying, material handling, and terminal infrastructure.
- Experience with terminals, rail infrastructure, barge infrastructure, bulk storage, loading systems, conveying systems, or industrial facility expansions.
- Spanish language ability is a plus, especially for communication with field personnel and team members.
- Proficiency with MS Excel, MS Project, project controls tools, and document management systems. Experience reviewing drawings in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar tools is a plus.
Project Scope
This role will support the continued development of industrial terminal and infrastructure projects. The Project Manager can expect to lead one medium-to-large project at a time while coordinating specialized functional leads and supporting smaller facility improvement or continuous improvement projects as needed.
Upcoming work may include rail loading infrastructure, storage expansion, material handling systems, terminal improvements, and other capital projects across the company's U.S. footprint. Project sizes may range from smaller improvement projects to multimillion-dollar industrial capital projects.
Compensation
Base salary range of $140,000 to $160,000, plus bonus. Compensation will be based on experience, with the upper end reserved for an exceptional, highly seasoned candidate who brings strong industrial construction knowledge, proven multidisciplinary project leadership, and the leadership presence required to drive accountability across the team.
Location and Travel
Tampa, FL is the preferred location for this role. Houston, TX may be considered for an exceptional candidate who can support projects with regular travel. This is not a fully remote position. The Project Manager must be able to spend time on project sites, work directly with field teams, and travel as needed based on project phase and construction activity.
Team Culture
The Projects Team values integrity, excellence, hard work, and passion. The right candidate will be honest, accountable, and willing to own overall project outcomes without pointing fingers. The team does not cut corners and expects a high standard of quality in both planning and execution.
This role is best suited for someone who enjoys leading complex work, building structure, solving problems, and creating accountability across a project team. The ideal candidate is practical, curious, field-aware, composed under pressure, and comfortable being firm about deadlines while treating people with respect.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in both office and active construction site environments.
- Ability to walk project sites, climb stairs or ladders, bend, squat, stoop, twist, and reach as needed.
- Ability to sit for extended periods and work at a computer.
- Ability to occasionally lift or carry up to 10 pounds.
- May be required to work at heights of up to 25 feet.

The company is an equal opportunity employer and provides equal employment opportunities to applicants and employees without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, protected veteran status, disability status, or any other legally protected basis, in accordance with applicable law.
The company is committed to providing reasonable accommodation to individuals with disabilities throughout the application and interview process.
