Statement of Primary Purpose

The Project SHIFT Coordinator is responsible for the implementation and coordination of the SCC Health Sciences Career Pipeline (SCC SHIFT) program. The Coordinator works closely with health sciences faculty, student services personnel, employers, and educational partners to develop and deliver a dynamic and engaging SHIFT program to area high school students. This program seeks to increase the number of students entering health sciences careers in the region through cultivating a rich pool of local high school students who are engaged and prepared to begin a two-year health sciences degree program at SCC.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

·         Coordinate high school participants in Project SHIFT to include health sciences career exploration, job observations, campus visits, test preparation and other activities to prepare students for successful entry into college health science programs.

·         Assist health science faculty in the development and utilization of mobile demonstration kits for engaging high students in health science activities.

·         Coordinate health sciences faculty outreach events to area high schools.

·         Assist in the marketing and recruiting of health sciences programs to area high school students.

·         Provide advising support for Career and College Promise (CCP) health sciences pre-majors.

·         Engage high school students in competitive application planning activities (reviewing each competitive phase) to help them connect and achieve their health career goals. Communicate Health Science Program deadlines and competitive admissions criteria.

·         Monitor student progress in completing the competitive application process.

·         Coordinate the Health Sciences Ambassadors program to engage participants in mentorship and outreach events.

·         Assist in the awarding of Health Science Ambassadors scholarships.

·         Coordinate summer health science camps.

·         Coordinate and/or assist with health science events for prospective students such as HOSA competitions, community STEAM nights, field trips, etc.

·         Coordinate participation of external healthcare and education partners in support of Project SHIFT.

·         Coordinate with public schools to strengthen the connection between Career and Technical Education (CTE) programming, Career and College Promise (CCP) pathways and college enrollment.

·         Submit a monthly monitoring report to the Director of Pre-Health Sciences.

·         Attend Health Sciences department meetings, engage with health sciences faculty/staff to remain current with departmental policies and procedures.

·         Participate in New Student Orientation, Career Days, Job Fairs, Open Houses, and other activities for supporting student success.

·         Provide advising support for health sciences pre-majors, prospective applicants and current health science students.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education       

Required: Associate’s Degree in education, communication, health sciences, or a closely related field required; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in a related field

Knowledge and Skills           

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Ability to connect, engage, and establish a rapport with high school age students.

Ability to be a team player, a problem solver, to follow complex directions, to be a multi-tasker, and must have a demonstrated ability to work independently with good judgment in decision-making.

Two years’ experience in high school or college teaching, advising, recruiting, success coaching, or related activities preferred.

Working Conditions and Environment

Standard College business hours Monday-Friday with some evening or weekend hours as needed.  

Position is based on the Jackson Campus with regular travel to other area high schools in Jackson, Macon and Swain Counties.

Equipment Operation

PC, copier, phones, standard office, and educational applications.
