Description

Must be a current Louisville Metro Department of Corrections (LMDC) Sergeant with two (2) years of continuous seniority in that position.

Summary Objective:

The purpose of this position is to supervise shift activities and operations of an assigned area within a correctional facility, prepares reports on emergency situations or significant occurrences, and answers questions from the public on the status of inmates.

This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Compiles evidence should legal action be taken and testifies in court.

  • Assists the department administrative staff in resolving personnel problems and employee complaints and grievances.

  • Patrols the correctional facility on an assigned shift to supervise and inspect the personnel, security equipment, activities and operations of an assigned unit, and reviews daily shift reports from subordinates for content, completeness and accuracy.

  • Discusses schedule of inmate movement, planned activities, and changes in procedures or operations with subordinate supervisors.

  • Confers with judges concerning the inmate jail population in order to determine the inmates who are eligible for early release or reassignment to an alternative sentencing program.

  • Interviews inmates to investigate and respond to their complaints or grievances, or to determine the proper classification and housing assignment.

  • Investigates cases of alleged employee misconduct and violations of criminal laws and department standard operating procedures, reports findings to management, and testifies in court or at hearings.

  • Provides technical assistance and instruction to department personnel concerning inmate custody, prisoner classification, and procedures.

  • Consults with and discusses shift activities and operations; emergency conditions; significant occurrences; and inmate housing classification, disturbances, and grievances with administrative staff.

  • Represents the department to other law enforcement agencies, court personnel, vendors, inmate families, and the public to provide information and answer questions on inmates and correctional facility operations and procedures.

  • Collects statistical data and prepares reports on department activities and operations and completes special projects.

  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.

  • Must be a current Louisville Metro Department of Corrections (LMDC) Sergeant with two (2) years of continuous seniority in that position.

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be vaccinated for hepatitis B, have provided evidence of immunity, or have signed a declination form within ten days of initial assignment.

  • Must pass an annual tuberculin test.

  • Must complete forty (40) hours of annual in-service training.

  • Must be on 24-hour call.

  • Must lift and restrain individuals.

  • Must be eligible for certification as a State Peace Officer.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.

  • Applicants who have illegally bought, sold, or trafficked, as defined in KRS 218A.010 and KRS 218A.1431, controlled substances, other than marijuana, within six years of application will be disqualified.

  • Applicants who have used an illegal controlled substance other than marijuana within the last six years of application will be disqualified.

  • Applicants who have illegally bought, possessed, or used marijuana, including medicinal cannabis, within six months of application will be disqualified.

  • Applicants who have illegally sold marijuana, including medicinal cannabis, within one year of application will be disqualified.

  • Applicants who have used a prescription-controlled substance without a prescription more than once within the last six years of application will be disqualified.

  • Applicants who have used a prescription-controlled substance without a prescription on a single occasion within the last six years of application will be disqualified for one year since the last use without a prescription.

  • Must not be a current user of illegal drugs.

HOME INCARCERATION

  • Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license.

  • Applicants and employees in positions which perform job duties that may require contact with offenders in the custody or supervision of the Department of Juvenile Justice or with youth in the care, custody or supervision of Youth Development must meet qualifications pursuant to the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act, 28 CFR 115.17 and 115.317, to include periodic post-employment criminal background checks.

  • Must not have ever engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution (as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997).

  • Must not have ever been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community, facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse.

  • Must not have ever been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in the previous question.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
