Description

MUST BE A CURRENT LOUISVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEE WITH FOUR YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AS A FIRE APPARATUS OPERATOR.

Essential Functions:

  • Disciplines, evaluates and trains subordinates, and operates and maintains equipment, quarters and fire apparatus used to combat, extinguish or prevent emergency incidents

Examples of Duties

  • Prepares and submits reports and recommendations
  • Responds to alarms received and directs the routes to be taken to incidents
  • Directs the activities of a fire company at the scene of emergency incidents
  • Directs the overhauling and cleaning up of premises after fires have been extinguished
  • Directs the cleaning of quarters, equipment and apparatus
  • Conducts roll call and inspects personnel
  • Maintains records of personnel, supplies and equipment
  • Assists the Fire District Chief in making surveys and submitting recommendations concerning needs for fire alarm boxes, water and other extensions of the fire alarm system
  • Maintains current maps and street indexes of the city
  • Enforces rules and regulations of the Division of Fire & Rescue
  • Evaluates the performance of employees under their command
  • Trains fire division personnel in all phases of firefighting and related disciplines
  • Ensures that proper training methods are being utilized
  • Ascertains the proper utilization of equipment
  • Schedules and conducts training exercises
  • Prepares and submits incident reports
  • Performs related work

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be a regular employee and currently be in the rank of Fire Apparatus Operator

  • Four (4) years of Fire Apparatus Operator experience in the Louisville Division of Fire.

  • If separated any time during the two year period prior to the final filing date the candidate must have been employed by the department for at least one year prior to the filing deadline and the separation must have for a period of less than one year.

Other Minimums:

  • Must wear personal protective and safety equipment as mandated by OSHA

  • Must be vaccinated for hepatitis B, have provided evidence of immunity, or have signed a declination form within ten days of initial assignment

  • Must work a varied schedule

  • Must be certified as a Fire Officer by the Louisville Division of Fire & Rescue

  • Must be certified and maintain certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Ambulance or Emergency Technician-Paramedic in the State of Kentucky

  • Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license

Physical Requirement & Working Conditions:

  • Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work

  • Communicates with individuals in person and utilizes all types of communication media

  • Lifts and carries items weighing in excess of 100 pounds in a team setting

  • Spends prolonged periods of time exposed to the elements

  • Endures extended periods of cardiovascular stress

  • Wears fully encapsulating entry suits

  • Operates fire vehicles by both day and night; observes emergency scene actions taking place; observes traffic in the vicinity of an emergency scene; observes fire code violations, and reads and prepares reports and correspondence

Length of Service: 10%

The deadline for meeting minimum length of service qualifications for promotional exams will not be at the time of the exam. Individuals taking promotional exams will be allowed to take such exams if they meet the length of service requirement by the date the eligibility list goes into effect. Thus, the four years of experience must be met on or before October 28, 2026.

Length of Service: Credit will only be given for up to ten (10) years in the previous position.
