OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

This position performs responsible law enforcement and investigative work to solve crimes, identify suspects, apprehend offenders, and assist in the prosecution of criminal cases. Detectives conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations, interview victims, witnesses, and suspects, collect and preserve evidence, prepare case files and reports, and testify in court.

Detectives may be assigned to general investigations or to specialized investigative areas based on the needs of the Sheriff's Office. All detectives remain sworn law enforcement officers and may be required to assist with patrol duties, calls for service, arrests, search warrants, emergency response, and other Sheriff's Office operations.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Conducts initial and follow-up investigations of criminal offenses.
• Interviews victims, complainants, witnesses, suspects, and other persons connected to investigations.
• Identifies, collects, photographs, documents, packages, and preserves physical and digital evidence.
• Prepares clear, complete, and accurate investigative reports, case files, affidavits, search warrants, arrest warrants, and related documents.
• Develops leads, conducts surveillance, performs undercover operations when assigned, and coordinates investigative activity with other officers and agencies.
• Arrests offenders and assists in the identification, location, apprehension, and prosecution of persons suspected of criminal activity.
• Works with the District Attorney's Office, courts, social services, child advocacy centers, financial institutions, schools, and other agencies as needed.
• Prepares cases for prosecution and presents evidence and testimony in court.
• Maintains confidentiality of sensitive investigations, victims, witnesses, criminal intelligence, and agency information.
• Responds to crime scenes, critical incidents, and calls for assistance as required.
• Maintains assigned equipment, vehicles, weapons, technology, and investigative materials in proper working order.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by the Sheriff or designee.

Detectives may be assigned to specialized investigative units or program areas including, but not limited to:

• General Investigations
• Criminal Investigations
• Property Crimes
• Crime Scene Investigations
• Economic Crimes / Financial and Fraud Investigations
• Sex Crimes and Crimes Against Children
• Domestic Violence Investigations
• Narcotics and Drug Diversion Investigations
• Sex Offender Compliance
• Threat Assessment / Education Investigations
• Cold Case Investigations
• Juvenile-related Investigations
• Other investigative assignments established by the Sheriff.

Assignment-specific responsibilities, training, certifications, schedules, and on-call requirements may be maintained in separate duty statements or unit procedures. Assignment to a specialized unit does not change the employee's underlying classification as Detective.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Considerable knowledge of modern investigative techniques, principles, and procedures.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws related to criminal investigations, search and seizure, arrest, evidence, and court procedure.
• Knowledge of evidence collection, crime scene preservation, report writing, interviewing, and case preparation.
• Skill in the use of firearms, law enforcement equipment, investigative technology, and self-defense tactics.
• Skill in interviewing victims, witnesses, suspects, and persons in crisis.
• Ability to work independently, manage a caseload, follow leads, and complete investigations in a timely manner.
• Ability to communicate clearly in oral and written form and to provide effective court testimony.
• Ability to work calmly under stress, maintain confidentiality, and exercise sound judgment.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, prosecutors, victims, families, outside agencies, and the public.

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training required.
• Law enforcement experience required; investigative experience or training preferred.
• Associate degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred but not required, unless otherwise required by assignment.
• Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Must meet all requirements for certification as a law enforcement officer under applicable North Carolina Sheriff and Training Standards.
• Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina driver's license.
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call rotations as required.
• Must maintain required training and certifications for assigned duties.
• May be required to obtain specialized training based on assignment, including training related to crime scene processing, child abuse, sex crimes, financial crimes, threat assessment, narcotics investigations, or other investigative disciplines.

Supplemental Information

HOURS

Detectives generally work a regular schedule; however, the position requires flexibility. Detectives may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, call-outs, and on-call rotations based on the operational needs of the Sheriff's Office.
