State Hospital North SHN is seeking applicants for Psychiatric Technician Trainee or a Psychiatric Technician position. State Hospital North in Orofino, Idaho is a licensed 55-bed psychiatric hospital providing primarily involuntary inpatient treatment for adults in psychiatric crisis who are committed to the Department of Health and Welfare. State Hospital North collaborates with patients, their families, and the referring regional behavioral health centers to develop targeted goals and objectives for the individuals treatment episode while simultaneously focusing on critical supports and arrangements for follow-up care after discharge.

This position also requires applicants to become certified in CPR and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention. This is a trainee level position. When training is satisfactorily completed, the employee may be eligible for a promotion to Psychiatric Technician. Employees may be required to work weekends, holidays, day, evening, and night shifts, including 5 shift pay. Drug-free and CHU information is available.

The Idaho Department of Health & Welfare is a drug-free workplace. Any applicant offered employment in this position will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test. In addition, the applicant will be required to complete and pass a criminal history background investigation after a conditional offer of employment. This is an ongoing announcement, which means that at the time applicants apply, we may or may not have an opening. Those applicants that take and pass the exam to show they meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on the referral list. When a position becomes available, the hiring supervisor will then directly contact those applicants they wish to interview off the referral list. This announcement may be used to fill full-time, part-time, and temporary positions. Temporary positions are limited to working 1385 hours in a 12-month period for any one state agency.

Employees are eligible for benefits if they work twenty 20 hours or more per week and the term of employment is expected to exceed five 5 continuous months.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

  • Provide a therapeutic environment
  • Facilitate on-going treatment for persons with mental illness in an inpatient setting
  • Implement treatment plans and monitor the outcome of goals
  • Conduct therapeutic activities and co-facilitate group therapy sessions with patients who require intense inpatient psychiatric care
  • This may involve skills training, psychosocial rehabilitation activities, behavior management, symptom management, and anger management
  • Interact with patients on a one-to-one basis and in group settings to encourage appropriate behavior and provide input into developing and changing patient treatment plans
  • Observe the signs of mental and physical illness, the patients response to treatment, personal hygiene activities, and the individuals behavior and interaction with others
  • Take and record patients vital signs and follow nursing procedures for patient care
  • Foster increased patient self-esteem through teaching and role modeling, facilitate problem-solving, record observations of individual and group behavior, and chart treatment progress.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for Psychiatric Technician Trainee

It is highly recommended to attach a one-page cover letter to your application to demonstrate how you meet the requirements below. Some knowledge of personal hygiene and first aid. Typically gained by at least two months of experience performing these functions, or a willingness to learn them.

Experience following written and oral instructions. Typically gained by at least six months of experience.

Ability to read and write in English.

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) licensure.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for Psychiatric Technician

You must possess all the minimum and specialty minimum qualifications below to pass the exam for this position. Please make sure your resume or work history supports your meeting the minimum and specialty qualifications for this position. It is highly recommended to attach a one-page cover letter to your application to demonstrate how you meet the requirements below. Some knowledge of human services, including psychology, nursing, or social work. Typically requires a completed college course in psychology, nursing, or social work, or at least six months of experience in dual diagnosis behavioral interventions, mental health disorders, and medications, psychiatric symptoms, or therapeutic communications.

  • Completed Psychiatric Technician training program through Southwest Idaho Treatment Center, State Hospital North, State Hospital West, or State Hospital South, or at least six months of work experience providing treatment services for the mentally ill.

Experience with behavior management for individuals diagnosed with mental illness and developmental disabilities. Typically gained by completion of at least six credits of upper-division college coursework in psychology or special education, or at least six months of work experience completing behavioral assessments and/or mental health scales, analyzing behavior and its function, and developing or assisting in developing behavior support plans.

Experience may have been gained through SHS, SHW, SWITC, or SHNs sponsored training.
