Psychiatrist (1099)

Pay rate: $155.00 per hour

Address: 500 State Hospital Dr., Osawatomie, KS, 66064

Hours: Monday – Friday 8 am – 4:30 pm

Function / Position Summary

  • Physician will provide psychiatric, and to some extent, medical services. Physician will admit, evaluate, treat patients. Physician will enter required assessment, treatment and discharge planning documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Physician will enter medication orders on the WinPharm pharmacy system.
  • Physician will actively participate in the individualized multidisciplinary treatment process and discharge planning. 
  • Physician will participate in hospital wide performance improvement activities and other medical staff functions as assigned. Physician will prepare court reports in collaboration with the treatment team and will attend court hearings as expert witness.

Special Qualifications/Education:

  • Completion of medical school training.
  • Completion of residency in Psychiatry in an approved training program, or at least two years of an approved residency training program.
  • Current active medical license in Kansas.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of psychiatric and medical medications.
  • Ability to work with other physicians and other hospital staff.
  • Ability to utilize technical skills such as typing, use of Dragon dictation.

1. Patient Care:

  • Admit patients. On a timely basis, complete and document admission paperwork which include, but are not limited to, psychiatric evaluations, medication orders, allergy forms, medication reconciliation, observation status, dietary orders, diagnostic orders, consultations, and others. Include diagnostic criteria to support the psychiatric diagnoses. 
  • Appropriately assess and treat the patients' psychiatric and medical needs, pain management, dangerousness to self and others. Prescribe medications according to established evidence-based practices and consider relevant factors such as safety profiles, effectiveness and cost. 
  • Educate patients on medications and other treatment interventions. 
  • Order diagnostic tests and document ICD -10 based diagnoses/symptoms to justify medical necessity. 
  • Utilize clinically appropriate, timely and cost-effective consultations with peers, medical consultants, and outside consultants/treaters. 
  • Assess patients and order seclusion and restraint when needed. Complete descriptive court reports and provide court testimony as needed.
  • Provide ongoing evaluation of patients &; psychiatric needs to optimize patient safety and quality of life and facilitate discharge planning. Respond to emergency medical conditions such as Dr. Heart and Code 2.
  • Document actions in the EHR or in appropriate hospital forms, in accordance with hospital policies and procedures and regulations by accrediting agencies such as Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS).
  • Reviewer: Clinical director, at least monthly, with evaluation reports at least annually for competency, timeliness and quality.

2. Teamwork:

  • Collaborate with other physicians, clinical and other hospital staff. Actively participate in multidisciplinary treatment planning and treatment review meetings and in discharge planning. 
  • Respond to inquiries, concerns of patients/significant others on a timely basis. 
  • Collaborate with administrative and executive clinical committee members on matters regarding patient care with community agencies such as other hospitals, community mental health centers, insurance providers. 
  • Participate in hospital wide and medical staff committees when needed.
  • Reviewer: Clinical director for quality.

3. Coverage & On Call Responsibilities:

  • Provide coverage for another physician when requested. Provide on call coverage when needed to ensure adequate physician coverage. As on call physician, respond on a timely basis to address standard and emergency psychiatric and/or medical situations. Respond to doctor-to-doctor calls and other requests from physicians and healthcare providers in the community. Consult with the medical consultants as needed.
  • Determine patient's need for a higher level of care; coordinate care with other physicians or with outside agencies such as Miami County Medical Center. Assess patients in seclusion and/or restraints and complete orders in accordance with hospital procedure. Utilize telephone consultation with the Superintendent, CEO, Clinical Director, Nursing Director or other administrative staff as appropriate. Report to the above leader's significant safety or critical incidents/situations such as significant injuries, elopements, deaths.
  • Reviewer: Clinical director for quality.
