Psychology Therapy Supervisor - Children's Specialized Hospital, RWJBarnabas Health
At Children's Specialized Hospital, part of RWJBarnabas Health, Psychology Therapy Supervisors play an important clinical and operational leadership role in supporting excellence in psychology and therapy services for children with a wide range of diagnoses, developmental needs, and complex medical conditions. As a member of the department leadership team, you will partner with the Director, Manager, and clinical leadership team to provide clinical supervision, mentoring, education, professional development, and operational oversight while maintaining a clinical caseload and delivering high-quality, family-centered care. You will help ensure excellence in clinical evaluations, goal development, treatment planning, and discharge planning through case review, observation, documentation monitoring, and direct clinical support. You will also contribute to staff development, performance improvement, policy and procedure development, recruitment and retention initiatives, program development, community outreach, and department and organizational initiatives. This position will be on site in Morristown and provide support to Bayonne and Clifton locations.
A typical day for a Psychology Therapy Supervisor may include:
- Partnering with the Director, Manager, and clinical leadership team in the oversight and advancement of clinical and operational functions within the Psychology/Therapy department.
- Providing clinical supervision, mentoring, guidance, and professional development to psychology and therapy staff, aides, students, and other personnel as designated by the Director and Manager.
- Overseeing weekly staff schedules and supporting appropriate staffing and clinical coverage based on department needs, patient volumes, and operational priorities.
- Monitoring outpatient volumes, patient flow statistics, documentation deficiencies, and department productivity, reviewing trends with staff and developing plans to address identified needs.
- Assisting with the coordination of outpatient schedules for patients requiring multiple services, when applicable, to support efficient and comprehensive care.
- Orienting new staff to department-specific procedures, clinical practices, policies, standards, and expectations.
- Supporting clinicians in achieving personal, clinical, departmental, and organizational goals through clinical supervision, mentoring, ongoing feedback, and professional development.
- Providing clinical input for 90-day reviews, Personal Development Plans, performance improvement processes, and Annual Performance Review (APR) activities in collaboration with the Manager and Director.
- Partnering with staff to develop Personal Development Plans and monitoring progress toward identified professional and clinical goals.
- Identifying, mentoring, and supporting emerging leaders within the department and organization at the personal, clinical, departmental, and organizational levels.
- Observing clinical practice and providing constructive feedback to support clinical growth, competency, professional development, and adherence to best practice standards.
- Evaluating and treating patients in accordance with professional standards and best practice guidelines while maintaining an assigned clinical caseload.
- Providing comprehensive clinical assessment and effective intervention for children with a variety of diagnoses and developmental, behavioral, psychological, and/or functional needs, as applicable to the professional discipline.
- Developing individualized treatment plans that address each child's clinical needs, functional goals, strengths, and family priorities.
- Modeling and ensuring the integration of a family-centered approach throughout clinical evaluations, goal development, treatment, intervention, and discharge planning.
- Ensuring families and caregivers are actively integrated into the treatment process and provided with appropriate education, training, resources, and strategies to support their child's progress and functional outcomes.
- Monitoring clinical documentation to promote accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and compliance with departmental, organizational, professional, and regulatory standards.
- Ensuring that department staff adhere to applicable administrative and clinical policies, procedures, professional standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Identifying opportunities for improvement and assisting with the development or modification of department policies, procedures, clinical guidelines, and service delivery processes.
- Partnering with the clinical leadership team to identify best practice guidelines and implement changes that promote clinical quality and effective service delivery.
- Participating in clinical performance improvement initiatives and helping identify and implement strategies that promote quality, efficiency, patient outcomes, and continuous improvement.
- Assisting with the identification, coordination, and execution of department-specific and organizational clinical projects.
- Overseeing department in-service training and supporting the identification of clinical education and professional development needs.
- Assisting with the development and delivery of staff education, competency development, and required educational activities.
- Assisting with maintaining relevant department manuals, clinical resources, educational materials, and staff education records.
- Maintaining communication with the Director, Manager, and Director of Clinical Quality regarding departmental operational issues, clinical quality initiatives, and clinical education opportunities.
- Serving as a link between Directors, Managers, clinical leadership, and department staff to promote effective communication and implementation of organizational and site-level initiatives.
- Communicating relevant organizational, departmental, and site-level information to staff in a timely manner and ensuring understanding of expectations, changes, and priorities.
- Participating in Leadership Retreats, department meetings, organizational meetings, and other meetings as designated by the Director or Manager.
- Assisting with hiring and recruitment activities, including participation in interviews and providing clinical input regarding prospective staff members as requested.
- Supporting initiatives designed to recruit and retain experienced clinicians and promote long-term professional growth within the organization.
- Assisting with customer service concerns and patient or family issues, working collaboratively with families, staff, and leadership to identify appropriate and effective solutions.
- Supporting Service Excellence standards in all interactions with patients, families, staff, colleagues, and external partners.
- Participating in the review of Press Ganey survey results and supporting appropriate follow-up and service improvement activities.
- Assisting with the development and management of the department budget in collaboration with the Director and Manager.
- Collaborating with the Director and Manager regarding department supply needs and ordering.
- Assisting with program development, marketing initiatives, community outreach, and educational activities that support awareness of department services.
- Collaborating with interdisciplinary team members to promote coordinated, comprehensive, and family-centered care.
- Establishing and maintaining effective communication with patients, families, healthcare professionals, CSH staff, community organizations, universities, referral sources, professional organizations, and other stakeholders.
- Supporting students and clinical learners through education, mentoring, clinical supervision, and professional development activities as appropriate.
- Participating in continuing education, professional development, department meetings, in-service programs, and other activities necessary to maintain clinical excellence and current professional practice.
- Meeting minimum annual expected clinical volumes while balancing clinical care, supervision, staff development, education, operational oversight, and departmental responsibilities.
- Demonstrating tact, initiative, sound judgment, flexibility, professionalism, and effective decision-making in the performance of clinical, supervisory, administrative, and leadership responsibilities.
- Traveling among Children's Specialized Hospital locations as needed to provide clinical care, attend meetings, support clinical supervision, or fulfill other supervisory responsibilities.

To Be Considered:
To be considered for this opportunity, you must meet the following criteria:
- Education: Master's or Doctorate degree from an accredited program as required by the applicable professional discipline.
- Licensure: Current Psychology, LCSW, LPC or LMFT license to practice in the State of New Jersey in the applicable professional discipline.
- Certification: Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider Certification required.
- Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience working with pediatric populations preferred.
- Supervisory Experience: Previous clinical supervision experience within the applicable profession preferred.
- Professional Development: Evidence of continuing education necessary to meet licensing and certification requirements and maintain current knowledge of best practices.
- Clinical Excellence: Demonstrated clinical excellence, sound clinical judgment, and commitment to evidence-based and family-centered care.
- Flexibility: Ability to demonstrate flexibility in work hours and performance of clinical, supervisory, educational, administrative, and departmental responsibilities.
- Schedule: Ability to work a full-time schedule (40 hours per week) that supports clinical care, supervision, education, meetings, operational responsibilities, and other departmental needs as designated by the Director and Manager.
