Description/Duties and Responsibilities

The City of Santa Clarita is recruiting for multiple part-time, temporary, seasonal (PTS) Assistant Preschool Teachers to work directly with the Primetime Preschool program. Primetime Preschool serves children ages 3-5 at multiple locations, providing an age-appropriate curriculum that includes a variety of activities that promote the growth of young learners socially, emotionally, physically, and academically.

This position will work during the school year, September through May, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Organizes, plans, and works directly with the Recreation Coordinator or Preschool Teacher to provide preschool programs for children
  • Assists in the organization, set-up, clean-up, and opening and closing of a variety of facilities
  • Organizes, prioritizes, and follows up on work assignments
  • Provides customer service to the public and parents of program participants, including responding to inquiries, supplying accurate information, and responding to questions over the phone, through e-mail, and in person
  • Assists the Preschool Teacher with developing, implementing, and leading the academic curriculum and planned daily activities
  • Maintains a well-organized, safe, and inviting classroom environment conducive to the optimal growth and development of children
  • Supervises and leads children, establishing positive relationships with program participants
  • Leads the classroom and develops curriculum in the Preschool Teacher's absence
  • Addresses behavior concerns in the classroom when necessary
  • Maintains awareness of children's needs and ensures proper staff and child ratio
  • Handles sign-in and out procedures and communicates with parents when necessary
  • Performs First Aid and responds to emergencies; reports incidents and accidents
  • Purchases classroom materials and supplies with the budget provided in the Preschool Teacher's absence
  • Creates and maintains various forms, logs, and reports for program areas, including incident and accident reports
  • Communicates with other City divisions and departments
  • Attends meetings and training sessions
  • Other duties, as directed by Recreation Supervisor, Coordinator, and/or Preschool Teacher

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • A minimum of one year of paid experience in preschool and/or child care programs
  • Completion of six Early Childhood Education (ECE) units or degree/certificate equivalent
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within one month of hire, Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of preschool and/or child care programs and Early Childhood Education best practices
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills and the ability to quickly and effectively resolve problems related to preschool programs
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to handle conflict, issues and concerns with children and parents as they arise
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Strong team player and the ability to work both independently and as part of a work group
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively prioritize daily workload, coordinate multiple tasks, be flexible to changing priorities, and ensure a safe classroom environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships
  • Ability to follow and enforce City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others
  • Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, documents, and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds may be required

As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ 3100-3109). Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.

In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.

This is not a designated Retired Annuitant position. If you are a California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) retiree, you may be required to reinstate into CalPERS.

PTS workers are at-will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 999 hours.
