Description/Duties and Responsibilities

The City of Santa Clarita is currently recruiting for a part-time, temporary, seasonal (PTS) Recreation Leader II to work the front counter at the Canyon Country Community. Under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor and Recreation Coordinator, this position will be responsible for assisting residents with their registration inquiries, along with collecting payments and maintaining paperwork.

This position will work up to 20 hours per week and requires the ability to work a set weekly schedule that may include evenings and weekends. Shifts may be assigned Monday -Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. and Saturday 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with front counter operations, including greeting participants, answering phones and emails, and providing program and general information to community members.
  • Operates cash register, handles cash and other tenders of payment, such as debit and credit cards; conducts closeout process
  • Maintains a professional attitude and provides excellent customer service to participants at all times
  • Utilizes recreation software to register participants for classes and financial transactions
  • Tracks supply inventory and maintains accurate records
  • Assists in creating and posting program flyers
  • Maintains various forms, logs, and reports
  • Oversees office workspace, maintaining adequate supplies and coverage of phones and the front counter
  • Assists with various Community Center programs and events, including the summer and afterschool program, classes, special events, etc.
  • Assists with the training of other part-time staff
  • Assists in organization, set-up, and clean-up of the facility
  • Organizes, prioritizes, and follows up on assignments.
  • Maintains various forms, logs, and reports
  • Attends meetings and training sessions
  • Follows and enforces City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others
  • Performs first aid and responds to emergencies; reports incidents and accidents
  • Other duties, as directed by Community Services Supervisor, Coordinator, Program Specialist

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent
  • One year of experience is in customer service, recreation, community services, or other related public service experience
  • Completion of college courses is highly desirable
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish is highly desirable
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within one month of hire, Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Ability to act as a role model by displaying positive and courteous behavior
  • Ability to operate a cash register and handle payments accurately
  • Strong leadership and customer service skills; ability to effectively respond to and address public questions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare written documents and correspondence
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with organizations that utilize various City facilities
  • Ability to handle difficult situations with professionalism
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel; knowledge of or the ability to learn the Citys registration software system
  • Strong team player and the ability to work both independently and as part of a work group
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to proofread materials for accuracy, clarity, and consistency
  • Ability to work flexible hours (including nights and weekends)
  • Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, equipment, banquet tables/chairs, podiums, stage, and dance floor weighing 40 pounds or more

In compliance with California law, positions working with children are required to be mandated child abuse reporters. A mandated reporter is an individual who is obligated by law to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.

In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.

This is not a designated Retired Annuitant position. If you are a California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) retiree, you may be required to reinstate into CalPERS.

PTS workers are at-will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 999 hours.
