Summary of Position

The Coon Rapids Ice Center is looking for a confident and enthusiastic PA Announcer to keep fans informed and engaged during Coon Rapids High School hockey games, the annual spring ice skating show, and other exciting ice center events. If you've got a great voice and love being part of the action, this is your chance to help make every event a memorable one.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Announces starting line-ups, public address announcements and intermission contests.
  • Contacts, meets and corresponds with coaches, officials, and other game related staff.
  • Assists with promotions of upcoming ice center events.
  • Maintains positive professional working relationships with all staff levels, public officials, and the general public.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance during scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary (October - March hockey season).
  • Performs essential position duties and responsibilities under the working conditions and physical demands described herein.
  • Performs other related functions as apparent or delegated.

Required Knowledge and Abilities

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

Ability to:

  • Multi-task and react quickly in an appropriate manner in stressful situations.
  • Complete scoresheets and understand statistical data.
  • Track shots, goals and penalties as defined by The Minnesota High School League.
  • Speak effectively in groups of people.
  • Comfortably announce to large groups using a microphone.
  • Use a fax machine and Outlook e-mail proficiency.
  • Deal with unforeseen problems in a calm, collective manner.
  • Be detail oriented and follow through with tasks.
  • Accept criticism or discipline.
  • Work nights and weekends to cover events.
  • Maintain a team and service oriented approach to work.
  • Must have the ability to accept constructive criticism or discipline in a positive manner, initiating self-development to improve job performance.

Must have:

  • Strong vocal talent.
  • Thorough knowledge of sports and rules of play.
  • Mathematical aptitude to complete scoresheets and understand statistical data.
  • Must strive to promote a cooperative atmosphere in the department and exhibit a positive attitude.

Qualifications and Other Information

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to the following:

  • One year of work related experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience using scoring software.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 15 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing and sitting and occasionally requires walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. Duties performed will be primarily within the Ice Center location. This position works closely with others. Noise level in the arena can be loud.

Are you eligible for veterans preference points? The City of Coon Rapids operates under a point preference system, which awards points to qualified veterans to supplement their application. Ten points are granted to non-disabled veterans on open competitive examinations; 15 points are awarded if the veteran has a service connected compensable disability as certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA). To qualify for preference for a competitive exam, you must have a passing score for the position and be a qualified veteran. Qualified veteran means a citizen of the United States or a resident alien separated from active duty under honorable conditions from any branch of the United States armed forces: 1) after having served on active duty for 181 consecutive days; OR 2) by reason of disability incurred while serving on active duty; OR 3) who has met the minimum active duty required as defined by Code of Federal Regulations, Title 38, Section 3.12a; OR 4) who has active military service certified under section 401, Public Law 85-202. Active military service must be certified by the United States Secretary of Defense as active military service and a discharge under honorable conditions must be issued by the Secretary. Veterans preference may be used by the surviving spouse of a deceased veteran and by the spouse of a disabled veteran who, because of the disability, is unable to qualify. You are ineligible to receive points if are were divorced from the veteran or were widowed and have remarried. Claims must be made on this application and documentation submitted within seven days of the application deadline for the position for which you are applying. The information you provide will be used to determine your eligibility for veterans preference points. You are not required to supply this information, but we cannot award veterans preference points without it. You must submit a copy of the "Member Copy 4" of your DD214 or other military documents to substantiate the service information requested.
