Epidemiologist / Public Health Data Analyst

Summary.
Sigma, Inc. is seeking an Epidemiologist / Public Health Data Analyst to support our client, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in advancing health system planning, emergency preparedness, and public health surveillance initiatives. This role focuses on analyzing complex healthcare datasets, developing data-driven insights, and translating findings into actionable recommendations to support public health decision-making.
The ideal candidate will have experience in epidemiologic analysis, healthcare data systems, statistical programming, and data visualization. This position requires strong analytical skills and the ability to collaborate with public health professionals, healthcare organizations, and government stakeholders.
Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct epidemiologic surveillance and analysis of healthcare utilization, capacity, workforce, and service delivery data.
- Monitor syndromic surveillance and other near real-time data sources to identify emerging health system trends.
- Extract, clean, integrate, and analyze large healthcare datasets from state and federal sources.
- Utilize tools such as SAS, SQL, Snowflake, or similar analytical platforms to perform data analysis.
- Develop dashboards, reports, maps, and visualizations using Tableau, Power BI, ArcGIS, or related tools.
- Support onboarding of healthcare facilities to the Automated Capacity Occupancy Reporting Network (ACORN), including technical assistance and data quality review.
- Evaluate surveillance systems and recommend improvements related to data quality, validity, and timeliness.
- Support emergency preparedness planning, situational awareness, and public health response activities.
- Prepare data briefs, reports, presentations, and policy recommendations for agency leadership and partners.
- Collaborate with internal teams, healthcare facilities, and external stakeholders to strengthen health system planning and resilience.
- Communicate complex analytical findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience conducting data analysis within healthcare, public health, epidemiology, or related environments.
- Strong experience with healthcare datasets, statistical analysis, and data interpretation.
- Proficiency with SQL and/or SAS for data extraction and analysis.
- Experience developing dashboards and visualizations using tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or ArcGIS.
- Knowledge of public health surveillance methods, healthcare systems, and epidemiologic principles.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present findings effectively.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics, Health Informatics, Data Science, or a related field.
- Experience supporting government, public health agencies, healthcare systems, or emergency preparedness programs.
- Experience with syndromic surveillance, health system capacity analysis, or healthcare utilization data.
- Experience with Snowflake, GIS tools, or advanced analytics platforms.
