    Job Description

    The Public Health Sanitarian I reports to the Department Manager 6. This position may conduct inspections or environmental sampling in one or more various programs including: Food, Pool, Childcare, Body Art, Septic/Well, Campground, or Vector Surveillance. The Public Health Sanitarian 1 will function as the primary trainer for employees in the lower classifications and conduct quality assurance activities with Environmental Compliance Technicians.

    Educational and Experience Requirements

    • Bachelor's Degree from a recognized college or university with a major in Environmental Health, Environmental Studies, Environmental Engineering, or the Physical, Chemical or Natural Sciences, or equivalent, with at least 30 semester hours of college credit in basic science coursework (life sciences, natural sciences, physical sciences, or health sciences) and at least one college level math or statistics class; AND
    • At least 3 years of full-time paid experience in environmental health inspecting, evaluating, and investigating complaints at food service establishments, pools, day care facilities; and conducting foodborne illness investigations.
    • Have a valid State of Michigan driver''s license and an acceptable safe driving record.
    • Obtain State or National registration as a Sanitarian/Environmental Health Specialist within 6 months of appointment to this classification.

    Special Conditions

    • Within 6 months of appointment to this classification, be sufficiently prepared and nominated by the Wayne County Environmental Health Section, to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) Food Service Section to be certified as a Standardized Trainer in the food program.
    • Individuals appointed to this classification must maintain their RS/REHS credentials, and registration as a Standardized Trainer while in this position.

    Required Tasks

    • Conduct inspections, evaluations or investigations at food service establishments, day care facilities, public swimming pools, private and public onsite water and sewage disposal systems, body art facilities, campgrounds, or other public buildings or sites that are under the jurisdiction of Wayne County Health, Human, and Veterans Services (HHVS) Public Health Division.
    • Prepare reports, issue permits, approvals or licenses.
    • Conduct field and office training with newly hired Environmental Compliance Technician 1s in various programs such as food, pools, body art, campgrounds, day care facilities, wells, onsite waste disposal systems, and vector surveillance, as work demands require. Keep accurate and up to date records of required food program training for accreditation.
    • Conduct field and office training with Environmental Compliance Technician2s and 3s, providing them with additional skills or areas of specialization such as plan review, specialized food processing, non-community water supply and newer technologies in onsite disposal systems.
    • Proctor and process Certified Food Manager Certification examinations for Food Program staff.
    • Conduct Quality Assurance inspections with Environmental Compliance Technician 1s, 2s and 3s in various programs.
    • Plan, schedule, coordinate/conduct continuing-education training for Environmental Health staff and keep records of any training that is required.
    • Create and conduct community outreach presentations, participate in community health fairs, create newsletters or other outreach materials, as needed.
    • Assist with accreditation preparation/state reviews.
    • Prepare and submit foodborne illness termination reports.
    • Review specialized food processing variance applications.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
