Description

The Seminole County Fire Department is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented and creative Public Information Office (PIO) Intern to assist with storytelling, media relations, and social media efforts.

This paid internship is ideal for a college student interested in public relations, communications, journalism, digital media, government, or public safety communications who enjoys writing, interviewing people, and finding meaningful stories that connect with the community.

Students who intern will be compensated and be able to use the experience as part of building resumes and gaining entry into their field.

Essential Functions

  • Draft news releases, media advisories, and media pitches
  • Assist with social media content creation and storytelling
  • Help identify and develop stories highlighting firefighters, paramedics, training, special operations, community outreach, etc.
  • Conduct interviews with department personnel and community members
  • Attend department events, training exercises, and community outreach initiatives for content gathering
  • Monitor social media engagement and assist with audience interaction
  • Helping organize media assets and monitor media coverage
  • Conducting research for public safety campaigns
  • Supporting internal communications and personnel engagement efforts

Additional Duties:

Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be enrolled (sophomore minimum) or recently graduated from a higher education organization (university, college, or technical institute)

Strong attention to detail and enjoyment of storytelling

Familiar and efficient in office systems (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)

Strong writing and organizational skills

Familiarity with social media platforms and content trends

Ability to meet deadlines and work independently with guidance

Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, or video editing a plus (but not required)

Previous internship experience in public relations or communications is a plus, but does not need to be in public safety

Additional Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.

All employees must attend Seminole County Required Trainings.

Department Specific trainings per position may be required.
