Temporary Public Information Representative I with a Work with a large, mission-driven public agency that supports essential water, environmental, and infrastructure services for a major metropolitan region

Duration: 960 Hours in a fiscal year
Work Schedule: Part-time: 20hr/week

Role Overview
The Public Information Representative I is an entry-level communications, education, outreach, and community relations professional responsible for supporting public awareness initiatives, educational programming, community engagement activities, and dissemination of information regarding District operations, policies, programs, and services. The role works closely with schools, community organizations, government representatives, and the public while learning the full scope of public information and outreach functions.

For the Office of Civic Engagement assignment, the PIR I serves as key support staff for the Education Outreach Program, delivering educational presentations, maintaining instructional materials, and supporting curriculum and newsletter development.
 
Key Responsibilities
Education & Community Outreach
  • Deliver lessons, assemblies, tours, and educational programming in classroom, outdoor, and virtual environments.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct facility tours and open houses.
  • Schedule and coordinate community education programs with schools and community groups.
  • Support curriculum development and educational workshops.

Communications & Public Relations
  • Promote awareness of District programs, projects, and initiatives.
  • Research, write, and edit communication materials, newsletters, articles, press releases, and informational content.
  • Assist with communication strategies and public information campaigns.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the public.

Stakeholder Engagement
  • Build and maintain relationships with schools, community groups, media representatives, and government agencies.
  • Represent the District during public outreach activities and community events.
  • Foster positive relationships with employees, community stakeholders, and the public.

Administrative & Program Support
  • Maintain and organize educational and outreach materials.
  • Provide administrative and operational support to assigned programs.
  • Assist with vendor coordination, invoice processing, and budget-related activities.
  • Support surveys, participant feedback collection, and program improvements.

Multimedia & Content Development
  • Assist in creating presentations, photography, video, social media, and communication materials.
  • Support graphic design and publication development when needed.
 
Required Experience
Minimum 1 year of experience in one or more of the following:
  • Public Relations
  • Public Information
  • Community Relations
  • Education
  • Outreach Activities
  • Graphic Design (where applicable)

Additional Requirement for This Assignment
  • One (1) year of experience in education, outreach activities, community relations, or public relations.

Preferred:
  • Experience working with K–12 students and youth audiences.
  • Experience collaborating with teachers, school administrators, and school office staff.
  • Public speaking, presentations, and group facilitation.
  • Educational programming and curriculum development.
  • Community outreach and stakeholder engagement initiatives.
