Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

The UNCG Police Department is committed to providing the highest level of campus law enforcement services available. Position Summary

The Public Safety Telecommunicator position will be responsible for answering and handling all incoming calls to the PD, dispatching officers and security as needed; maintain constant communication with officers in the field providing information and monitoring their safety; operate and maintain DCI/NCIC terminals determining validity of drivers' licenses, registrations and wanted info; maintain and handle emergency systems on the university campus to include alarms, camera systems, and telephone and radio recording devices; maintain an accurate log of all activities and calls; issue building keys to appropriate personnel on campus keeping a photo record of key distribution, issue emergency alerts via the university-wide notification system, monitor campus building access software.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Requires certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or the ability to achieve certification within 45 days of employment. Some positions may require Basic Telecommunicator Certification in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.

Key Responsibility

Maintain a communication center keeping the flow of communication between the public and the police officers running smoothly by use of telephones, DCI terminals, and two separate radio systems.

Essential Tasks

• Answer all phone calls and radio transmissions.
• Dispatch officers and emergency units (fire and rescue).
• Handle walk in traffic by listening to their problems and connecting them with a police officer.
• Monitor radio transmissions from other police departments that could affect our campus.
• Maintain an awareness of location of officers at all times providing back up support from other officers as needed

Key Responsibility

Maintains an accurate and complete log of all activities related to any call, contact and/or transmission received by the department.

Essential Tasks

• Enter all data from phone calls or radio transmissions into Southern Software Computer-aided Dispatch.
• Copy data from DCI/NCIC into CAD.
• Enter officers disposition and codes used for closing calls.
• Creates and maintains paperwork and files pertaining to wanted persons, stolen property, towed vehicles and any subject trespassed by the department or university.

Key Responsibility

Monitors all DCI transmissions dispatching appropriate information to all police officers; obtains and provides supporting documents needed to issue or serve warrants or make arrests.

Essential Tasks

• Retrieves information from DCI and dispatches to all officers if applicable.
• Search for warrant and arrest information on all hits through the DCI and verifying warrant and arrest information with appropriate Police Department.
• Uses Banner to research needed and requested information for the officers on students and/or faculty.
• Issue BOLO's

Key Responsibility

Maintains and handles emergency systems in communications implementing Emergency Notification System as required and needed.

Essential Tasks

• Responds to all alarms, dispatching officers and contacting University departments.
• Monitors the camera systems and makes notifications as appropriate and necessary.
• Monitors telephone/radio recording making sure the system is constantly operational.
