The Metacomet Emergency Communications Center (MECC) is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of full-time Public Safety Telecommunicator II (PST II). MECC is a regional emergency communications center located in Norfolk, Massachusetts, providing emergency communications services for six member communities.

Our Public Safety Telecommunicators are trained to receive 911 emergency and non-emergency business calls and dispatch the appropriate police, fire, and EMS resources. This position requires the ability to receive and process multiple requests for information simultaneously while maintaining accuracy in a fast-paced environment. Telecommunicators are also responsible for monitoring multiple public safety radio channels and alarm monitoring systems.

This position is hired as a PST II. Employees hired into this position are expected to successfully complete all required training and become qualified in two (2) of MECC's three (3) operational disciplines: 911 Phone Operator, Police Radio Operations, and Fire Radio Operations. Assignment to disciplines and training progression will be determined by MECC based on operational needs. At minimum, achieving and maintaining PST II qualification is a condition of continued employment.

Working under the direct supervision of a Shift Commander, Public Safety Telecommunicators receive emergency and non-emergency calls requesting police, fire, EMS, and other emergency services for participating communities. They determine the nature and location of emergencies, establish response priorities, dispatch the appropriate resources in accordance with established policies and procedures, maintain communications with field personnel, and accurately document all calls for service.

Essential Functions

• Be Proficient in Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and its integrated systems, including but not limited to; GIS mapping, Fire Station Alerting and CJIS/NCIC.
• Receive emergency 911 and non-emergency business calls while courteously, professionally and efficiently obtaining all relevant information.
• Obtain and verify critical information such as location, nature of the emergency, and caller details to determine the appropriate response.
• Provide Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) pre-arrival instructions, including CPR, choking, childbirth, and bleeding control until responders arrive.
• Dispatch and communicate with police, fire, and EMS personnel in accordance with MECC policies, procedures, and operational objectives.
• Continuously re-evaluate incidents, determine the appropriate level of response, and direct information to the appropriate responders.
• Maintain familiarity with the geography of the communities served.
• Follow MECC’s Chain-of-Command; read, acknowledge and follow MECC Policies and Procedures; carry out oral and written direction.
• Operate and monitor various complex public safety systems including, but not limited to; radios, telephones, alarm panels, surveillance systems, and e-mail.
• Maintain a calm, courteous, and professional demeanor during high-stress and emotionally charged situations.
• Maintain detailed, accurate, and timely records of all calls, unit statuses, and dispatch activities using CAD and other systems.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, partner agencies, and mutual aid agencies.
• Work in a 24-hour, 7-day-per-week environment, including nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required.
• Staff a dispatch console for extended periods while maintaining constant situational awareness.
• Testify in court as a material witness relative to work product and related activities when required.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Employment Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Preferred certifications include EMD, CPR, Next Generation 911, APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator I (PST I), and CJIS. Candidates not currently certified must successfully obtain all required certifications within two (2) months of hire.
• Must successfully complete all required training and achieve PST II qualification by becoming certified in two (2) of the MECC's operational disciplines (911 Phone Operator, Police Radio Operations, and Fire Radio Operations) within the timeframe established by MECC. Maintaining PST II qualification is a condition of continued employment.
• Successfully pass State, FBI, and MECC background investigations.

Pay during training: $27.45/hour, increasing to $28.84/hour upon successful completion of training.
