This position is responsible for performing administrative and paraprofessional duties in the Public Works Department for the City of Hutchinson.

Job Competencies: Essential Functions include the following. Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing. Schedule and shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity.

  • Maintains records and coordinates various projects and initiatives, including APWA accreditation and building maintenance
  • Collects and analyzes data for the department's performance measurement and benchmarking program
  • Coordinates development review, budgets, 5-Year Capital Improvement Plan, 5-Year Municipal Equipment Reserve Funds and FEMA reimbursements
  • Develops and creates informational displays and materials for the department's communication program
  • Edits and proofreads reports and documents to inform and educate internal and external audiences
  • Advises and assists in developing the department's website and social media presence
  • Provides general administrative support, including phone coverage, assisting walk-in customers and dispatching crews
  • Operates computers, printers, copiers, telephone systems and other office equipment
  • Prepares reports and interprets written and oral instructions, reports, files and documents
  • Solves problems independently, including handling complaints, purchasing, prioritizing assignments, personnel issues and office equipment problems
  • Makes decisions independently regarding citizen complaints, purchasing supplies, prioritizing assignments, researching information and performing duties efficiently
  • Communicates effectively with the public, supervisors and co-workers
  • Possesses skills in computers, word processing, spreadsheets, research, writing and basic mathematics
  • Demonstrates excellent public relations, organizational and communication skills
  • Enforces and maintains compliance with all federal, state and local laws and ordinances
  • Performs other duties as assigned or deemed necessary
  • Complies with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures
  • Operates all job-related equipment, machinery, tools and other aids as required or needed
  • Protects and maintains any confidential information you have access to, whether oral, written, or electronic

Position Requirements and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or other equivalent
  • Associate's degree in Business, Public Administration or related field preferred
  • Three years of senior-level administrative support experience
  • Experience with HTML, Adobe and Publisher preferred

Certifications / Licenses:

  • Valid Kansas Driver's License with acceptable driving record
