Description

Performs entry-level labor or support work for an assigned unit such as Sewer, Ditch, Traffic, Asphalt, Refuse, etc.

Examples of Duties

• Opens the gate and greets the landfill users.

• Inspects yard waste and non-hazardous debris loads for type, content and size, assesses the appropriate charge and collects the money.

• Assist with directing the landfill users as to where to dump items and assists them with off-loading or mulch loading.

• Assist with maintaining the closed landfill by cutting grass, brush and weed eating.

• Performs other labor work as needed such as:

• Picking up trash/refuse

• Maintaining street lines and signs, closing roads to protect coworkers engaged in hazardous situations

• Pouring concrete to create pieces such as curb gutters, sidewalks, etc.

• Clearing sidewalks, ditches or cutting grass

• Assists other crews as needed.

• May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call and emergency situations.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience:

• Ability to read, write and understand oral/written instructions in English and minimal experience required (less than 6 months). High school diploma preferred.

Licenses and/or Certifications:

• Possession of an appropriate drivers license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

• May require possession of or ability to obtain specific licenses and/or certifications depending on departmental assignment.

• Obtain Virginia commercial driver's license within six months of hire.

• Obtain VDOT Flagger certification within six months of hire.

Knowledge:

• Knowledge of hand and power equipment used in assigned unit.

Skills:

• Skill in operating equipment assigned to each unit.

Abilities:

• Ability to do medium to heavy manual work outdoors for long periods of time.

Work Environment:

• Worker is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, traffic conditions, extreme noise, odors, heights or depths, dust and/or to potentially dangerous materials.

Essential Physical Activities:

• Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception.

• Typical weight handled: up to 75lbs.
