Acts as receptionist at the Patient Information desk, greeting and directing staff, visitors, and general public and providing information about patients (e.g., location, status).

Responsibilities:
  • Uses the hospital's computerized patient information system, to look up data on patients (e.g., room number, telephone number, patient status) as requested by staff, visitors, callers. Uses daily computer printout of patient population as needed (e.g., if computer system is down).
  • Directs visitors, staff, other patients to appropriate hospital areas as required.
  • Picks up various lists (e.g., Ambulatory Surgery, OR, physician schedules), announcements (e.g. seminars, special meetings) daily from mail room; familiarizes self with contents so that accurate information may be given to callers.
  • Helps patients get telephones turned on or off, by contacting telephone operators; pages administrators as needed.
  • Channels all incoming calls and provides direct numbers as needed; connects inside callers with local and out of state numbers as appropriate.
  • Provides paging services; overhead, beepers, fire alerts, codes, traumas, and disasters.
  • Monitors oxygen gas and other alarms located in public communications areas; reports sounding alarms to appropriate department or person.
  • Takes messages after 5PM, weekend, and holidays, from the emergency engineering/housekeeping number to report problem to appropriate department.
  • Provides telephone and communication services for the Medical Center in emergency situations according to hospital policies and procedures (e.g., codes, traumas, disasters, bomb threats).
  • When fire alarms sound, determines location from the alarm, pages appropriate area, and calls fire department.
  • Maintains departmental logs, recording long-distance calls, fire alarms, unusual situations ("Trouble log”), etc.
  • Assists in training new telephone room personnel by answering questions, explaining system.
  • Adheres to established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
Qualifications:

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalency preferred.

 

Experience:

1 year of experience in customer service or extensive public contact preferred.

 

Skills:

Good oral communication skills.

Good interpersonal skills. 

Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position; knowledge of a second language helpful.
