Fountain Valley School, a selective and diverse boarding school, educates 250 students in grades 8–12 on a beautiful 1,100-acre campus in Colorado Springs, CO. Founded in 1930, the School provides a rigorous, global curriculum in academics, arts, athletics and the outdoors.
Position Summary:
Fountain Valley School is seeking a passionate, organized, and community-oriented Climbing Program and Facility Coordinator to support and elevate one of the school’s most unique and visible programs. This position will oversee the day-to-day management of the climbing gym, support the growth and development of the climbing program, and help strengthen Fountain Valley School’s reputation within the climbing community.
The Climbing Program and Facility Coordinator will work closely with the Director of Athletics to ensure the climbing gym remains a safe, organized, and dynamic training environment for students of all ability levels. The role includes responsibilities in gym operations, route setting, coaching support, recruitment, and community engagement. This position is designed to maximize the potential of the climbing gym as both a student experience asset and a recruitment tool for prospective students interested in competitive climbing and outdoor education. This position is a temporary position from August through December 19, 2026.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Manage the organization, cleanliness, and functionality of the climbing gym
Maintain climbing holds, equipment inventory, and gym consumables
Assist with gym maintenance projects, including T-nut repairs and routine upkeep
Conduct and document routine safety inspections of walls, anchors, and climbing hardware
Establish and maintain gym-use policies, orientation procedures, and safety expectations
Coordinate logistics and scheduling for gym use outside of regular practice hours
Set and modify climbing routes for athletes of varying abilities and experience levels
Design routes intentionally to support skill progression and competition preparation
Maintain a balanced variety of climbing difficulties to support beginner, JV, and Varsity climbers
Assist with the design and implementation of curriculum for climbing programs
Support tryouts, practices, competitions, and off-campus climbing opportunities
Assist with hosting climbing competitions and events at Fountain Valley School
Serve as a liaison between students, families, climbing organizations, and the athletic department
Help foster a positive and inclusive climbing culture within the FVS community
Support outreach efforts and engagement with the broader Colorado Springs climbing community
Assist the admissions and athletics departments in recruiting prospective student-climbers to Fountain Valley School
Build and maintain relationships with climbing clubs, gyms, coaches, and organizations to help identify and attract prospective climbers to FVS
Promote the climbing program as a distinctive component of the Fountain Valley student experience
Coach 3 season of climbing
Regular and reliable attendance is required
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Strong understanding of climbing gym operations, route setting, and climbing safety standards
Demonstrate cultural competency and skills engaging with and learning from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Demonstrate skills in communication and interpersonal relations within and across multiple constituencies.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities
Demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills
Passion for climbing, outdoor education, and student development
Ability to positively represent Fountain Valley School within the climbing and broader community
Experience working collaboratively within a team environment
Must possess a valid driver's license and/or obtain a Colorado license within 30 days of hire.
Ability to obtain and maintain CPR Certifications
Working Conditions:
Environment includes indoor climbing facilities and occasional outdoor climbing or athletic events
Physical demands include standing for extended periods, climbing, lifting and carrying equipment, and performing gym maintenance tasks
Some evening and weekend responsibilities may be required
Working relationships include students, families, faculty, coaches, admissions staff, and outside climbing organizations
Salary: $25.00 per hour
