At Zimmer Biomet, we believe in pushing the boundaries of innovation and driving our mission forward. As a global medical technology leader for nearly 100 years, a patient's mobility is enhanced by a Zimmer Biomet product or technology every 8 seconds.
As a Zimmer Biomet team member, you will share in our commitment to providing mobility and renewed life to people around the world. To support our talented team, we focus on development opportunities, robust employee resource groups (ERGs), a flexible working environment, location specific competitive total rewards, wellness incentives and a culture of recognition and performance awards. We are committed to creating an environment where every team member feels inspired, invested, cared for, valued, and have a strong sense of belonging.
What You Can Expect
We build technology that restores mobility and improves patients' lives. In Austin, our R&D team develops next-generation surgical robotics - and this role is how we prove the hardware is right before it ever reaches a patient.
You will inspect prototypes and development hardware and own the accuracy of our R&D metrology lab. If you can read a drawing, hold a tolerance and defend a measurement, we can teach you the rest.
This is an R&D-only site - no commercial production. You will inspect machined and additively manufactured prototypes, robotic carts and camera stands, robot spare parts, reusable and single-use surgical instruments, and test fixtures, all in support of design verification and validation builds.
Full-time onsite in Austin, Texas, working side by side with the engineers whose designs you measure.
Medical device experience is preferred, not required. We welcome inspection, metrology, calibration and precision machining professionals from any tolerance-critical industry - aerospace and defense, automotive, semiconductor, energy and nuclear, robotics and automation, contract machining, accredited calibration labs, or military PMEL / TMDE programs.
How You'll Create Impact
Perform incoming, in-process, and final QC inspection of R&D prototypes and development builds
Conduct dimensional inspections using metrology tools such as:
Calipers, micrometers, height and pin gauges, gauge blocks, indicators, surface plate setups, optical comparators and surface-finish equipment
Portable arm CMM (FARO, Hexagon/ROMER, Creaform or equivalent), bridge CMM, vision systems or laser scanning - experience on any one platform transfers, and training on ours is provided
Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and specifications to verify prototype conformance
Perform receiving inspection of supplier hardware, including review of certificates of conformance, material certifications and first article reports
Support design verification and validation builds with measurement data, build-unit traceability and configuration records (training provided)
Generate and document inspection reports, measurement data, and nonconformance records
Own the R&D metrology lab - equipment setup and qualification, calibration scheduling and tracking, and environmental monitoring
Partner with engineers on measurement data analysis and improve inspection methods as designs evolve
Ensure compliance with quality system requirements and documentation standards
What Makes You Stand Out
What we look for on day one, in any industry:
Strong proficiency with precision measurement tools and inspection techniques
GD&T and blueprint reading to ASME Y14.5 or ISO 1101 - datums, feature control frames, position, profile and runout. This is the one skill we do not train from zero, and it transfers from any precision industry
Hands-on metrology experience on any platform, plus the judgement to select the right method, build a repeatable setup, and know when a measurement is not trustworthy
High attention to detail, with strong documentation and organizational discipline
Ability to work in a fast-paced R&D environment with evolving designs
Team-oriented mindset with effective communication skills
Nice to have, training will be provided here, so please do not self-select out if you do not have experience in all of the following areas:
Medical device quality systems (ISO 13485, 21 CFR Part 820 / QMSR) and design controls; FARO arm operation and CAM2 / PolyWorks; nonconformance and CAPA records; calibration program administration; and handling and packaging requirements for surgical instruments
You do not need to arrive knowing medical device regulation. Familiarity with ASME Y14.5, ISO 10360, ANSI/NCSL Z540.3, ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 13485 - or an equivalent audited quality system such as ISO 9001, AS9100, IATF 16949, NQA-1 or MIL-STD - is a plus.
