Job Title: Quality Control Mechanical Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on ensuring the quality and accuracy of mechanical systems by reviewing and inspecting construction and fabrication drawings within a fabrication shop environment. The Quality Control Mechanical Engineer works closely with the fabrication team to verify that HVAC and plumbing systems are fabricated, built, and assembled in accordance with design specifications for a variety of building projects, including healthcare, education, data centers, and large commercial facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Work in the mechanical contractor's fabrication shop to review shop drawings and verify that HVAC and plumbing systems are fabricated, built, and assembled correctly according to construction and fabrication drawings.
  • Inspect mechanical and plumbing systems in the fabrication shop before they are shipped to job sites, confirming that installations meet design and quality standards.
  • Conduct quality audits on fabricated mechanical systems to identify discrepancies, potential issues, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate with the fabrication team to provide guidance on how to correctly build HVAC and mechanical systems in alignment with design intent and best practices.
  • Interpret and compare mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and fabrication drawings to the physical assemblies to ensure consistency and compliance.
  • Document findings from inspections and audits and communicate issues clearly to the appropriate team members for resolution.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts in the fabrication shop by sharing feedback on design clarity, fabrication processes, and quality control procedures.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings for HVAC and plumbing systems in buildings.
  • Understanding of fabrication drawings and how they translate into physical assemblies.
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems, including design, inspection, and commercial HVAC applications.
  • Experience or training in mechanical inspection and fabrication inspection.
  • Familiarity with sheet metal design and sheet metal assembly for HVAC systems.
  • Knowledge of plumbing and plumbing design as part of building mechanical systems.
  • Mechanical engineering background, supported by either a 4-year or 2-year Mechanical Engineering degree.
  • Strong attention to detail when reviewing construction and fabrication drawings.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fabrication shop environment and collaborate with fabrication teams.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 4-year or 2-year degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Interest in working for a mechanical contractor and gaining hands-on experience in a fabrication shop.
  • Exposure to or interest in working on healthcare, education, data center, and large commercial building projects.
  • Motivation to develop as an entry-level engineer and build practical experience in HVAC and plumbing systems.
  • Strong communication skills to provide clear guidance and feedback to fabrication personnel.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced project environment with multiple concurrent projects.

Work Environment

This is an on-site role based in a fabrication shop environment, working Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The position involves daily interaction with fabrication teams and regular hands-on inspections of HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical assemblies. You will work with construction and fabrication drawings, mechanical systems, and sheet metal components in a shop setting that supports projects such as healthcare facilities, educational buildings, data centers, and large commercial developments.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Columbus, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
