Responsible for leading quality and process control activities throughout the coating operation, including developing and training Quality Control Technicians and operators, overseeing wet section process control and laboratory testing, supporting production operations, ensuring compliance with quality standards, driving continuous improvement, and partnering cross-functionally to achieve product quality and customer satisfaction objectives.
 

Key Focus Areas

  • Oversee and ensure compliance with all quality processes, standards, and procedures throughout the coating line.
  • Verify film quality and thickness standards through wet and dry film measurements, drawdowns, and related coating tests.
  • Verify and optimize coater setups, including DIP, PC, and FC applications, viscosity settings, wet film targets, and roll speeds.
  • Establish, monitor, and adjust line operating parameters, including line speed, tensions, oven temperatures, coating weights, oven cure conditions, and color standards to ensure product conformance.
  • Perform wet section process control activities and verify PMT results to maintain product quality requirements.
  • Review and prepare quality control data, product specifications, and order documentation to support scheduled production.
  • Verify incoming raw materials meet established quality, specification, and compliance requirements.
  • Conduct claim investigations and required testing, including panels, retained samples, defect evaluation, and root cause analysis support.
  • Manage non-prime coil disposition by collecting samples, identifying defects, determining disposition, and ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
  • Coordinate with production and exit-end personnel to ensure proper product disposition and resolution of out-of-specification conditions.
  • Troubleshoot coating, process, and quality-related issues in partnership with operations and production teams.
  • Record and maintain quality, production, and process control data, including dent logs and other required documentation.
  • Perform chemical titrations on pretreatment in accordance with established procedures.
  • Calibrate laboratory equipment and testing devices according to established schedules and procedures.
  • Maintain laboratory chemical inventories and testing supplies to support uninterrupted operations.
  • Train, coach, and support operators in coating processes, quality standards, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide coverage and support for Quality Control Technicians, product disposition activities as needed.
  • Support internal quality audits and respond to customer quality documentation and information requests.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Foundational Experience

Required Qualifications & Experience: To be considered for this position, you must possess the following qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • 5+ years of manufacturing, coating, quality assurance, or quality control experience in an industrial environment
  • Experience leading, training, mentoring, or developing employees in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written materials such as customer specifications, SOPs, work rules, etc.
  • Detail Oriented – ensures accuracy of product and documentation to meet internal and/or external customer demands
  • Basic math and measurement skills
  • Basic computer skills

Desired Qualifications: To be considered an ideal candidate, you should possess some or all of the following qualifications:

  • Metals, coating, roll forming or industrial manufacturing experience
  • Supervisory or team lead experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with quality management systems, internal audits, corrective actions, and root cause analysis
  • Knowledge of ASTM coating tests
  • Experience with spectrophotometer equipment
  • ISO quality system experience

  • Basic computer skills
  • Time Management – prioritizing work to meet internal and/or external customer demands
  • Good communication skills
  • Mobile equipment operations skills
  • Ability to read and comprehend written materials such as schedules, customer specs, SOPs, work rules, etc.
  • Ability to work up to 12-hour shifts

Work Environment

The employee may be required to enter areas that are near moving mechanical parts, with occasional exposure to hazardous chemicals, and extreme cold or heat. The noise level in the work environment is considered moderate and may require the use of hearing protection. The employee will be required to utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when accessing certain manufacturing areas. 

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee is occasionally required to stand; sit; bend; stoop; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee will be required to be capable of lifting a minimum weight of 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close-up and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
