Join Berkeley Lab as a Quantum Science Communications Specialist supporting the Quantum Systems Accelerator, a major U.S. Department of Energy research initiative advancing quantum information science. In this role, you will partner with scientists, Principal Investigators, and communications colleagues to turn complex scientific and engineering breakthroughs in quantum computing into clear, compelling stories for the scientific community, news media, government stakeholders, and the public.

At Berkeley Lab, communications helps connect scientific discovery with the people and communities it can impact. You will help amplify advances in quantum information science while working alongside researchers and communicators across a collaborative national research ecosystem.

You will:

  • Partner with Principal Investigators, researchers, and communications colleagues to develop clear and compelling stories about quantum information science.

  • Write, edit, and produce content for news media, scientific audiences, employees, government stakeholders, and the public.

  • Develop communications products including science stories, social media content, presentations, reports, white papers, leadership messages, and stakeholder materials.

  • Translate complex scientific and technical concepts-including quantum computing hardware and software advances-into accurate, audience-appropriate communications.

  • Coordinate with Berkeley Lab communications teams, DOE stakeholders, QSA partner institutions, vendors, and creative services to deliver communications projects from concept through publication.

  • Manage multiple communications assignments while applying Berkeley Lab policies, editorial standards, and sound professional judgment.

We are looking for:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in journalism, corporate communications, English, or a technical/related field or equivalent work experience and a minimum of 2 years of related experience.

  • Strong science writing, editing, proofreading, interviewing, story research and concept development skills for clearly communicating complex scientific/technical accomplishments and quantum computing hardware and software innovations to a range of audiences.

  • Experience communicating science through social media and multi-media technologies.

  • Experience interacting with high-level internal and external contacts to establish working relationships needed to produce publications for release.

  • Strong interpersonal communication, teamwork, collaboration and client service skills, with demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with a diverse group of colleagues.

  • Proven ability to be a creative and critical thinker and problem-solver.

  • Demonstrated organizational and project-management skills, including the ability to prioritize multiple assignments, coordinate reviews, and meet competing deadlines.

  • Proficient with both print and electronic publishing technologies such as web publishing software, content management systems, and digital communications practices.

  • Ability to work on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.

Desired skills/knowledge:

  • Familiarity with Overleaf/LaTeX highly desirable.

Additional information:

  • Application date: Priority consideration will be given to candidates who apply by September 11, 2026. Applications will be accepted until the job posting is removed.

  • Salary range: The expected salary for this position is $97,968 - $108,840, which fits into the full salary of $87,072 - $146,940 depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities. This includes education, certifications, and years of experience.

  • Background check: This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position.
