SALARY: County Supplement of $1000

DESCRIPTION: The Quiz Bowl/Academic Bowl Coach is responsible for developing, organizing, and leading

the school's competitive academic team. This role supports high-achieving students by fostering

critical thinking, teamwork, and a love of learning across multiple subject areas. The coach plans

practices, prepares students for competitions, manages logistics, and promotes a positive and inclusive

team environment. The position may include overseeing tryouts, coordinating tournaments, and collaborating

with school staff, parents, and league organizers.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Team Leadership & Student Development
  • Recruit, mentor, and maintain an engaged roster of team members.
  • Foster a supportive, academically challenging, and respectful team culture.
  • Provide differentiated coaching to students with varying strengths (e.g., literature, science, history, fine arts, current events).
  • Teach test-taking strategies, buzzer techniques, and rapid-recall skills.
  1. Practice Planning & Instruction
  • Design and run regular practices that include:

  • Toss-up and bonus question drills

  • Subject-specific mini-lessons

  • Scrimmages and mock tournaments

  • Strategy sessions focused on timing, communication, and team dynamics

  • Track student progress and provide individual feedback.

  1. Competition Preparation
  • Research and register the team for local, regional, and state competitions.
  • Oversee team selection for events based on performance, attendance, and readiness.
  • Prepare study materials and coordinate preparation for specific tournament formats.
  • Ensure all equipment (buzzers, timers, materials) is maintained and competition-ready.
  1. Logistics & Administration
  • Communicate schedules, expectations, and updates to students and families.
  • Arrange travel, permissions, and supervision for competitions.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, scores, and academic performance.
  • Manage the team budget, including fundraising or grant opportunities if applicable.
  1. Collaboration & Promotion
  • Work with teachers to identify students with strong academic potential.
  • Communicate with the administration about team accomplishments and needs.
  • Promote the Academic Bowl program within the school community.
  • Uphold school values, policies, and standards during all team events.
  1. Professionalism & Program Growth
  • Stay informed on Quiz Bowl/Academic Bowl rules, question styles, and competition updates.
  • Continuously improve practice materials and coaching strategies.
  • Explore opportunities for expanding the program (e.g., JV team, middle school feeders, outreach events)
