SUMMARY

The R&D Engineering Technician builds and tests coaxial connector, cable and harness assemblies to validate the research and development of new and existing designs, including organization and execution of connector prototyping, router verification, in-process inspection, tooling, connector assembly instruction and work instructions validation. 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Build and solder small, intricate coaxial connectors and cable assemblies.
  • Setup and operate laboratory RF test equipment – VNA/PNA, TDR, RF Leakage System and DWV.
  • Setup and operate laboratory environmental test equipment – Thermal Shock, Temperature Cycling and Humidity Chambers, Corrosion /Salt Spray, Mechanical Shock, and Insertion Force machines.
  • Work from schematics, diagrams, sketches and verbal instructions to construct experimental or prototype models and fixtures to conduct test requirements.
  • Use precision measuring devices (i.e. micrometer, caliper).
  • Perform verification and routine maintenance on test equipment.
  • Familiarize self with military and industry standard specifications in relation to RF microwave connectors and cable.
  • Understand and run verification tests called out in MIL-STD-348, MIL-PRF-39012, MIL-DTL-17
  • Working knowledge - ISO 9000; ANSI; & Military standards, stack-up tolerance, tool design, and solder techniques/strength.
  • Assist Design Engineer with writing qualification test plans and reports.
  • Communicate (verbal/written) with engineers and/or sales about required/requested technical details.
  • Engage in verbal/written communication with customers to obtain information and provide technical. Assistance.
  • Problem Solving: Identify and resolve problems in a timely manner. Gathers, analyzes, and interprets information to make informed decisions. Develops practical alternative solutions and evaluates outcomes. Collaborates effectively in team-based problem-solving environments and applies emotional intelligence to build positive working relationships, manage conflict, and achieve successful resolutions.
  • Must be willing to flex between Production and R&D assignments to support customer and business needs.
  • Availability to work overtime, including weekday and/or occasional weekend hours, as needed to support customer and business requirements.
  • Willing and able to travel to customers, suppliers, subcontractors or other Amphenol facilities, when necessary.
  • Other duties as required in support of the department and the company.

This role does not include direct supervisory responsibility for other employees; however, it provides opportunities for professional growth and advancement within the organization.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Associate of Science degree from an accredited college, university, or trade school preferred; equivalent combinations of education and directly related experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of directly related experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in a custom, make-to-order manufacturing environment required.
  • Formal training and demonstrated application of structured problem-solving methodologies such as Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA), 8D, or similar continuous improvement tools preferred.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Degree or Certificate in Electronics or equivalent preferred. 

 

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English

 

JOB SKILLS

  • Experience working with environmental test equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience with VNA (Vector Network Analyzer) and TDR (Time Domain Reflectometer).
  • Proficiency in SAP (or similar ERP System), Excel and MS Office.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively interface/collaborate with a wide range of people
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and demonstrated mechanical skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Basic electrical knowledge and understanding of fundamentals.
  • Ability to write technical reports.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

As part of their job duties, the employee must sit for lengthy periods while frequently using their hands to handle objects and communicate verbally. Additionally, they may need to stand, walk, reach, and occasionally lift objects weighing up to twenty (20) pounds. This role requires specific vision abilities, including close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • ASTM F–2412–2005, ANSI Z41–1999, or ANSI Z41–1991 rated safety toe shoes in specific areas
  • Clear ANSI Z87.1 safety-rated glasses in specific areas
  • Ability to compile with JSA in specific areas
