R&D Lab Tech
Category: Hourly 1st shift • Location: Tennessee (Union City)
Job Description
The R&D Lab Technician supports research and development efforts by performing testing, preparing materials, and assisting engineers with the development of new products, formulations, and processes. This role requires strong attention to detail, hands-on laboratory skills, and the ability to accurately collect and report data.
Essential Functions
Key Responsibilities
- Perform testing and measurements on rubber compounds using laboratory equipment.
- Operate laboratory mixers and mills to prepare experimental formulations.
- Collect, prepare, and label samples accurately for testing and evaluation.
- Record, analyze, and report test data in accordance with established procedures.
- Assist engineers in developing, building, or testing prototypes, products, and processes.
- Support root cause analysis and problem-solving initiatives.
- Assist in evaluating new raw materials and experimental formulations.
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness, organization, and safety standards.
- Monitor and report equipment issues or unsafe conditions.
- Manage and maintain R&D lab raw material inventory.
Qualifications
Qualifications & Requirements
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with employees and vendors.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Excel skills.
- Basic computer skills and experience working with databases.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality as required.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 lbs with or without accommodation
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or related field.
- 2+ years of hands-on laboratory or field testing experience.
- Relevant technical certifications.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Physical Requirements
- Physical ability to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 lbs with or without accommodation
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs (team lift required when necessary)
- Ability to stand and work in a physically demanding environment
- Must wear required PPE at all times
- Ability to work safely around moving mechanical parts
- Work in a hot environment
- Maintain regular attendance
- Ability to push/pull 50-150 lbs. on a wheeled cart; static push/pull: 20 lbs.
- Pinch minimum 6 lbs.
- Grasp minimum 35 lbs
- Full range of motion required: cervical, shoulders, elbow, wrist, fingers, hands, trunk twist, and feet
- Working Conditions: moderate noise, moving mechanical parts, static shock, burns, go up heights,
odors, dust, protrusions, narrow access, good vision and hearing
