Job Title: Calibration Technician B / R&D Lab Technician
Job Description
The Calibration Technician B / R&D Lab Technician applies knowledge of measurement science, mathematics, physics, and electronics to calibrate a wide range of inspection, measurement, and test equipment across multiple disciplines. In this role, you ensure the accuracy and reliability of critical instruments by following established calibration procedures, identifying and correcting measurement errors, and documenting results with precision. You work primarily in a professional laboratory environment, receiving general instructions on work assignments and using your technical judgment to recognize deviations from accepted practice. This position offers hands-on work with advanced RF and multi-discipline test equipment, opportunities to support field calibration, and clear paths for professional growth.
Responsibilities
- Calibrate inspection, measurement, and test equipment (IM&TE) in one or more disciplines including Acoustical, Chemical, Dimensional, DC/Low Frequency, RF/Microwave, Fluid, Mechanical, Optical, Thermodynamics, and Time & Frequency to ensure compliance with published specifications.
- Maintain secondary and working calibration standards to support consistent and traceable measurements.
- Perform basic maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of precision equipment to keep instruments operating within required tolerances.
- Collect, compile, measure, summarize, and accurately record data gathered during calibration activities.
- Identify out-of-tolerance conditions and perform corrective actions such as adjustments, component replacement, or application of correction factors.
- Identify and correct measurement errors where applicable, using your understanding of measurement science and instrumentation.
- Prepare clear and complete calibration reports and certificates that document procedures, results, and any adjustments made.
- Adapt existing calibration equipment, standards, and techniques to accomplish unique or non-standard measurement tasks.
- Train less-experienced technicians in calibration concepts, procedures, and best practices.
- Collaborate and interact professionally with other technicians, Customer Service Representatives, Account Managers, and customers to address technical questions and service needs.
- Perform general laboratory housekeeping to maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow written procedures, company policies, and quality standards in all calibration and documentation activities.
- Support occasional local field work to service larger equipment at customer sites, as required.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned to support laboratory operations and customer requirements.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to perform general math and algebra functions to support measurement and calibration calculations.
- Good written and oral communication skills to document results and interact with internal and external stakeholders.
- Basic ability to troubleshoot, repair, align, and optimize precision equipment.
- Basic computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel for documentation and data entry.
- Minimum of one year of calibration experience, with some experience allowable through formal metrology training.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in measurement, documentation, and reporting.
- Ability to work as a self-motivator, follow written procedures, and function effectively as a team player.
- Very good interpersonal and customer service skills for working with colleagues and customers.
- Experience running tests on devices to calibrate them using formal, documented processes.
- Calibration and metrology experience with equipment such as digital multimeters (DMM), signal generators, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, function generators, frequency counters, and power meters.
- Willingness to travel as required for local field work, where applicable.
- Ability to work with and interpret test procedures, schematics, and circuit-level information when troubleshooting equipment.
- Experience with RF engineering concepts including radio frequency, modulation, phase noise, spectral analysis, antennas, and wireless or radio test equipment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Five or more years of calibration experience on electronic and RF equipment such as DMMs, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, function generators, frequency counters, and power meters is highly valued.
- Formal metrology training, including backgrounds such as PMEL or similar military or technical calibration programs, is a strong plus.
- Experience with preventive maintenance on test and measurement equipment.
- Familiarity with lab equipment used in RF, wireless, and radio environments, including radios, antennas, and RF test setups.
- Experience working with or around wireless networks, radio systems, and RF test benches.
- Exposure to or experience with circuit-level troubleshooting and repair, including reading schematics and understanding signal paths.
- Experience with calibration of dimensional equipment such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, gauge blocks, surface plates, optical comparators, and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM).
- Experience with DC/Low Frequency electrical equipment including digital multimeters, power supplies, low-frequency oscilloscopes, and signal generators.
- Experience with RF/Microwave equipment such as spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, RF signal generators, and RF power meters and sensors.
- Experience with thermodynamics and temperature equipment including thermocouples, RTDs, temperature probes, ovens, environmental chambers, and dry block temperature calibrators.
- Experience with fluid, pressure, flow, and process instruments including pressure gauges, pressure transducers or transmitters, flow meters, and vacuum gauges.
- Experience with mechanical equipment such as torque wrenches, force gauges, and load cells.
- Experience with optical equipment including optical comparators, light meters or photometers, and laser measurement tools.
- Experience with chemical and analytical instruments such as pH meters, conductivity meters, gas analyzers, and laboratory analytical instruments.
- Experience with time and frequency equipment including frequency counters, time interval analyzers, and oscillators.
- Familiarity with acoustical measurement devices such as sound level meters, microphones, and vibration analyzers.
- Hands-on experience using calibration tools such as multifunction process calibrators, pressure calibrators, deadweight testers, dry block temperature calibrators, and reference standards for weights, voltage, and frequency.
- Background or interest in working in a DOD or defense-related environment is beneficial for some locations.
- Interest in ongoing professional development in metrology, RF calibration, and multi-discipline calibration work.
Work Environment
You work primarily in a professional in-lab calibration environment, using advanced test and measurement equipment across multiple disciplines. The schedule follows a stable, full-time first-shift pattern, Monday through Friday, roughly 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with no weekend work. Depending on location, you may perform some local field work within approximately a two-hour radius to service larger equipment at customer sites, with only infrequent overnight travel. In some locations, you work inside a secure, embedded facility with no travel, offering a consistent and structured environment. The dress code is relaxed, typically a polo or nice shirt with jeans and closed-toe shoes, with no routine PPE requirements. You collaborate in small, specialized teams where technical ability and quality of work are highly valued, and you benefit from structured onboarding, strong support for skill development, and clear opportunities for growth, including expanded responsibilities and potential access to a company vehicle for field work as you advance.
