Join us at Nayax, a global fintech leader (NASDAQ; TASE: NYAX) revolutionizing the world of cashless payments, consumer engagement, and business management solutions. With more than 1,200 employees across 12 offices worldwide. At Nayax, you'll be part of a diverse and innovative community where your work makes a real impact and helps shape the future of payments.
Retail Pro International (RPI) is a global leader in retail management software, empowering retailers in over 80 countries with flexible, scalable, and powerful solutions. Our mission is to enable retailers to thrive in a rapidly evolving landscape by delivering innovative technology, deep industry expertise, and a commitment to long-term partnerships. RPI was acquired by Nayax in 2023 and has been merged into the company's product portfolio.
We are currently looking for a R&D Team Leader to join our team and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our company.
In this role, you will lead the modernization of one of the retail industry's most battle-tested POS platforms. Retail Pro is a mature enterprise retail ecosystem with over 20 years of domain knowledge, powering complex retail operations, POS flows, payments, replication, and back-office systems across global markets.
This role is not about maintaining legacy software - it is about transforming a proven platform into a modern, AI-augmented engineering organization and technology stack. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone energized by complexity, large-scale modernization, and building high-performance engineering culture. The ideal candidate combines architectural depth, strong execution capability, AI-first thinking, and the ability to lead teams through deep technical and organizational change while continuing to deliver production value to customers.
The environment includes legacy Delphi/Pascal backend systems, Angular-based frontend platforms, replication-heavy infrastructure, cloud migration initiatives, and emerging AI-assisted engineering workflows.
The R&D Team Leader will report directly to the CTO, Retail Pro & Retail.
Role Summary:
As the R&D Team Leader, you will own the technical and organizational evolution of the Retail Pro platform. You will lead a mixed-seniority engineering organization through a multi-year modernization journey spanning backend architecture, frontend modernization, cloud infrastructure, AI-assisted development, engineering processes, and operational scalability.
You will act as both a strategic technical leader and a player-coach: defining architecture, reviewing code, mentoring developers, introducing AI-driven workflows, and building a modern engineering culture from the ground up. You will work closely with executive leadership, product management, and engineering teams to balance long-term modernization with ongoing customer delivery commitments.
This role is ideal for someone who sees large legacy systems not as a burden, but as an opportunity to create massive leverage through modernization, AI adoption, and engineering excellence.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Lead the modernization of a mature enterprise retail platform from legacy technologies toward a scalable, cloud-ready architecture
- Define and execute a phased migration strategy for Delphi/Pascal backend services toward modern backend technologies and service-oriented architecture
- Drive adoption of AI-assisted engineering practices across development, QA, documentation, code review, onboarding, and operational workflows
- Introduce and standardize engineering processes including specifications, architecture reviews, sprint planning, CI/CD, code review, testing standards, and release management
- Lead frontend modernization initiatives across Angular applications and NX monorepo architecture
- Redesign replication-heavy and tightly coupled infrastructure into scalable, observable, resilient distributed systems
- Evaluate and guide database modernization initiatives including Oracle/MySQL migration strategy toward PostgreSQL and cloud-native architectures
- Build engineering culture focused on ownership, velocity, quality, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Mentor developers across multiple seniority levels while identifying capability gaps and making difficult staffing decisions when necessary
- Reduce dependency on tribal knowledge by driving documentation, architecture mapping, and AI-assisted knowledge extraction
- Lead QA modernization initiatives including automated testing strategy, AI-assisted QA tooling, and release confidence improvements
- Improve observability, monitoring, operational tooling, and production diagnostics across the platform
- Partner with executive leadership to translate technical debt, architectural risk, and modernization priorities into actionable business decisions
- Define practical AI integration opportunities inside the product itself, including AI-BI capabilities, data connectivity, and future AI-driven retail workflows
- Balance long-term architectural improvements with short-term customer and business delivery needs
What Makes You a Great Fit
- 7+ years of software engineering experience with at least 3+ years leading engineering teams or technical organizations
- Proven experience leading modernization of large legacy platforms into modern architectures in production environments
- Strong hands-on engineering background with experience reviewing architecture, debugging complex systems, and guiding implementation details
- Experience working with large, mature codebases containing significant technical debt and historical business logic
- Deep understanding of modern engineering practices including CI/CD, code review, testing strategies, observability, and cloud-native development
- Strong experience with distributed systems, transactional systems, or high-availability enterprise platforms
- Experience driving cloud migration initiatives and modern infrastructure adoption (AWS preferred)
- Demonstrated use of AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar tools in real engineering workflows
- Strong understanding of where AI tooling accelerates engineering and where governance, review, and guardrails are required
- Experience mentoring engineers, building teams, improving engineering culture, and raising organizational technical standards
- Strong communication skills with ability to explain technical trade-offs and modernization strategy to non-technical stakeholders
- Comfortable operating in environments with incomplete documentation, evolving processes, and organizational ambiguity
- Strong prioritization skills and ability to balance modernization efforts against active product delivery commitments
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience with Delphi/Object Pascal or other legacy enterprise technologies
- Experience with C# / .NET - particularly in enterprise backend modernization, Windows-native services, or migration paths from legacy COM/Delphi environments
- Experience modernizing enterprise POS, retail, fintech, payments, or transactional platforms
- Experience with NX monorepos, Angular modernization, or frontend platform migration initiatives
- Experience designing AI-assisted internal developer platforms or AI-enabled product capabilities
- Experience with PostgreSQL migrations and database modernization strategy
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures, RabbitMQ, replication systems, or offline-first enterprise systems
- Experience building automated QA frameworks in legacy environments
- Experience integrating AI systems with internal business data, analytics, or BI infrastructure
- Strong DevOps or platform engineering background
- Experience leading hybrid teams of internal engineers and external contractors
Compensation and Benefits
- The base salary range for this position is $150,000-$180,000 per year
- Eligibility for an annual performance bonus and additional benefits.
- Final compensation will be determined based on experience and qualifications.
