Job Summary:

The Diabetes Clinician assesses, treats, and tracks pregnant patients with diabetes; and adult diabetic patients in all areas of the Department of Medicine at WIH. The incumbent interviews patients and assesses diabetes status, provides instruction and education, and maintains appropriate records. Designs and implements educational programs and materials, serves as a resource for patients as well as staff, and communicates effectively with other members of the patients' healthcare team.  Assists in the administrative management and decision making process for the department and performs other duties as requested.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Demonstrates competency, individually and as part of the multidisciplinary team, in performing clinical care and assessment of all patient populations.
Provides assessment and treatment for diabetes patients of the Department.
Ensures patients understand their care and treatment through education and 
Maintains appropriate files on patients and programs.
Serves as a resource for patients, hospital staff, and community on diabetes in pregnancy.
Oversees activities of Assistant Diabetes Clinician.
Preserves and protects patient's rights to confidentiality.
Performs other job-related duties as required or requested.

Requirements:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree and must have and maintain current RN Licensure in the State of Rhode Island required or Bachelors degree in community/clinical nutrition and maintain registered dietitian status a current RD Licensure in the State of Rhode Island required; Master's Degree in related field preferred. Must have and maintain Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) and/or Certified Diabetes Outpatient Educator (CDOE).  Additional training in diabetes mellitus required. Must have five to seven years' experience in direct clinical care of patients.  
Strong communication and inter-personal skills necessary as well as fluency in the English language.
