Job Summary:
The Radiation Oncology Engineer operates under minimal supervision to provide essential technical support and innovative solutions for linear accelerators and other sophisticated radiation-producing equipment. This role is pivotal in ensuring optimal performance and safety, directly impacting patient treatment efficacy and departmental productivity.
Education & Experience
Education and Experience Required:
ASEE or Associate's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and two (2) years experience maintaining and servicing medical linear accelerators or CT or MR imaging equipment.
Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:
N/A
Preferred Qualifications:
Specific experience on Varian or Elekta accelerators, or Philips and imagers is preferred. Authorized Varian, Elekta or Philips training is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Responsibilities:
Perform advanced technical support related to the maintenance and operation of medical linear accelerators, computed tomographs (CT) or Magnetic Resonance Imagers (MRI) and other large, complex equipment found in a radiation oncology department including preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and performing emergency repairs.
Coordinate vendor service when necessary.
Maintain inventory and orders parts for linear accelerators, CTs or MRIs, and other assigned equipment as necessary
Design, construct and modify treatment accessories for physics and other department members as needed for patient treatment or imaging, quality assurance and research support.
Provide special and periodic reports and statistics concerning service quality and maintains technical performance data and other related documentation.
Assist in preparation of technical service cost estimates and proposals.
Advise in selection and evaluation of technical service contracts.
May train/mentor Radiation Oncology Engineers concerning advanced technical skills as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, constant handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant exposure to bio-hazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, occasional sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more).
