Radiation Therapist

Summary:

• Shift: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday

Responsibilities:

• Deliver therapeutic radiation according to the prescription and instructions provided by the Radiation Oncologist.
• Check prescriptions to ensure dosage accuracy and eliminate errors.
• Take and interpret port-images to determine accuracy; ensure images are reviewed and approved by a Radiation Oncologist.
• Prepare treatment room and equipment, including immobilization devices, field parameters, and beam shaping.
• Explain procedures and set up patients for treatment.
• Observe and report changes in patient's condition to the Radiation Oncologist or radiation therapy nurse.
• Record treatments administered in patients’ charts and record/verify system.
• Perform chart checks and report any discrepancies.
• Perform daily QA and safety checks as required by regulations.
• Maintain equipment in safe and good working condition; report defects or deficiencies for adjustment and repair.
• Maintain work area in a clean and orderly condition; stock and replenish supplies as needed.
• Administer radiation treatments and maintain accurate daily treatment records.
• Perform simple dose calculations using computer software.
• Verify/localize treatment area using radiographic film or electronic medium and submit films for further action.
• Understand the function of equipment and use it to its full potential, including wedges and compensating filters.
• Detect treatment unit malfunctions and report them when safe limits are reached.
• Explain treatment procedures to patients, answer questions, and reassure them to alleviate fears and/or apprehension.
• Maintain visual and audible communication with the patient during treatment.
• Report any unusual or adverse patient reactions to the appropriate staff member.
• Instruct student radiation therapists and assist in their evaluation at the end of their rotation.
• Attend chart rounds, display films, and participate in discussions of patient treatment.
• Create immobilization devices during simulator rotation and adjust shielding blocks as needed.
• Keep patients informed of delays and any progress made in resolving them.
• Display professional behavior at all times.

Requirements:

• Experience with Varian TrueBeam technology and Mosaiq EMR.
• Minimum one year of experience in clinical therapeutic radiation therapy.

Preferred Skills:

• Proficient in performing safety checks on treatment machines/simulators and recording data daily.
• Ability to interpret beam films and ensure accuracy with approval from the appropriate Radiation Oncologist.
