Job Description

The Radiology Specialist Assistant provides patient care services in accordance with approved delineation of privileges under the supervision of a physician. This role delivers age-appropriate care across the lifespan and supports the continuum of care through clinical expertise, patient assessment, and collaboration with the healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide medical services to patients within scope of practice and assigned privileges

  • Perform patient assessments using age-specific growth and development principles

  • Deliver safe, high-quality, and compassionate care

  • Assist supervising physician with radiologic procedures and patient management

  • Maintain patient flow and organize clinical workload effectively

  • Provide guidance and direction to clinical staff involved in patient care

  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations

  • Ensure compliance with Medical Staff Bylaws, hospital policies, and regulatory standards

  • Maintain confidentiality of protected health information (PHI)

  • Perform fluoroscopic procedures, including barium studies (e.g., upper GI series, small bowel follow-through, and enemas).

  • Perform joint injections under fluoroscopic or ultrasound guidance.

  • Conduct paracentesis and thoracentesis procedures, including patient preparation, imaging guidance, and post-procedure monitoring.

  • Place abscess drains using ultrasound or CT guidance, ensuring sterile technique and accurate positioning.

  • Perform bone marrow biopsies, including site preparation and specimen collection.

  • Perform biopsies with ultrasound and CT guidance for various tissues and organs, adhering to protocols for minimizing complications.

  • Perform ultrasound-guided and stereotactic breast biopsies as well as marker clip placement.

  • Collaborate with radiologists, nurses, and technologists to prepare procedure rooms, manage equipment, and maintain inventory of supplies.

  • Document procedures accurately, including procedural notes, imaging findings, and patient outcomes.

  • Educate patients on procedures, obtain informed consent, and provide pre- and post-procedure instructions.

  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols, radiation protection standards, and infection control guidelines.

Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of an approved course of study acceptable to the New York State Education Department

  • Bachelor's degree required Radiologic Technology or a related field; certification as a Radiologist Assistant (RA) or Physician Assistant (PA) with radiology focus preferred.

  • Certifications: Current ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) certification in Radiography; additional certifications in CT, Ultrasound, or Interventional Radiology (e.g., RRA - Registered Radiologist Assistant) are highly desirable.

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required; ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) preferred.

Certification & Licensure

  • Registered Radiologist Assistant (R.R.A.) Certification

  • ARRT certification in Radiography

  • Licensed in New York State

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required; ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) preferred.

Experience & Skills

  • Must hold privileges at Samaritan Medical Center

  • Minimum of 2-3 years in a radiology or interventional setting, with hands-on experience in most, if not all, of the listed procedures. Proficiency in ultrasound, CT, and fluoroscopy guidance is essential.

  • Demonstrated clinical competence

  • Strong technical skills in imaging modalities and sterile procedures.

  • Ability to work under pressure in emergent situations.

  • Proficiency with imaging software.

  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and radiology principles.

  • Ability to work independently and make sound clinical decisions

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and critical listening skills

  • Ability to organize workflow and maintain patient throughput

  • Basic computer proficiency

  • Good hand-eye coordination and technical precision

  • Commitment to ongoing professional development

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Medium work: lifting up to 50 lbs., frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 lbs.

  • Regular patient contact with potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens (Category I)

  • Must safely move patients of all sizes Exposure to medical waste and infection control hazards

  • May involve long hours, irregular shifts, and high-stress situations
