Position Summary
The Rainier School District is seeking dedicated, adaptable, and enthusiastic Certificated Substitute Teachers to join our district-wide teaching pool for the upcoming academic year.
As a substitute teacher, you play a critical role in maintaining educational continuity and creating a safe, inclusive learning environment for our students when regular classroom teachers are absent. Flexible scheduling allows you to choose your availability and preferred grade levels or school locations across the district.
Key Responsibilities
- Instructional Delivery: Execute lesson plans provided by the absent classroom teacher while maintaining high academic and behavioral expectations.
- Classroom Management: Maintain a safe, respectful, and orderly classroom environment conducive to student learning using positive behavioral interventions.
- Student Supervision: Fulfill supervised duty responsibilities (e.g., hallway, recess, lunchroom, dismissal) as assigned by building administration.
- Communication & Record-Keeping: Document student attendance, complete classroom reports, and leave detailed notes for the returning regular teacher regarding progress and lesson coverage.
- Adaptability: Demonstrate flexibility in stepping into diverse subject areas, grade levels (K-12), or special education settings on short notice.
Qualifications & Requirements
To be eligible for placement in the certificated substitute teacher pool, applicants must meet the following qualifications and complete all mandatory district onboarding requirements:
Required Certification:
- Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate (Residency, Professional, Initial, Continuing, or Substitute Certificate) issued by OSPI.
Additional Requirements:
- Must pass a Washington State Patrol and FBI fingerprint background check prior to employment.
- Verification of identity and employment eligibility (Form I-9).
- Mandatory Vector Solutions Training: All applicants are required to complete assigned online Vector Solutions compliance and safety courses (e.g., Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention, Hazard Communication) as a condition of employment prior to being placed on the active substitute list.

- Cultural competency and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in public education.
- Ability to leverage technology used in instruction (e.g., interactive whiteboards, Google Classroom, Canvas).
- Clear communication skills with students, school administrative staff, and colleagues.
Additional Details
- This position is not eligible for benefits.
- Pay Rate: $90 half day, $180 full day (7 hours)
