Conservation Lands & Resources (CLR) is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Range and Agricultural Program Coordinator to serve as the Bar V Ranch Manager within the Range and Agricultural Lands, Water, and Special Projects (RAWS) Division. This critical role is primarily responsible for daily management of the County-owned herd of beef cows on the Bar V Ranch, maintaining the historic Bar V Ranch headquarters buildings and coordinating the implementation of the Bar V Ranch Education Program. This position requires the applicant to reside in the main house at Pima County's Bar V Ranch.
The CLR Department manages over 260,000 acres of County conservation lands, including 13 active cattle ranches, iconic natural resource parks such as Tucson Mountain Park, Colossal Cave Mountain Park, and Agua Caliente Park and a variety of open space properties. The Division’s resource management responsibilities provide critical leadership and solutions towards implementation of the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan (SDCP), one of the most ambitious conservation programs by a local government.
Essential Functions:

Oversees or participates in the rangeland monitoring program and associated data sets, communicates grazing plan adherence, range conditions, and operational issues to the NR Superintendent and Program Manager;
Coordinates communication, activities, and compliance efforts between contracted ranchers and farmers and the Natural Resources (NR) Superintendent of the Range Section;
Coordinates and oversees range, natural resource, and infrastructure projects; conducts routine property monitoring; prepares reports; and ensures regular maintenance of Ranch, Farm, and open-space conservation properties;
Leads and schedules contracted crews and County staff at project sites and represents the Range Section at meetings and events with partner organizations in the assigned zone;
Oversees or supports the Bar V Ranch cattle operation, including annual grazing and breeding plans, infrastructure maintenance planning, and budget recommendations in collaboration with supervisory staff;
Performs or oversees animal husbandry, herd health, and routine veterinary care for County-owned horses and cattle under semi-arid range conditions;
Supports implementation of the Bar V Ranch Education Program with Pima County Cooperative Extension 4-H, including logistical coordination, event planning, and instruction for 4-H and FFA participants.
Resides in and maintains historic ranch housing facilities or reports to assigned duty stations, depending on zone requirements;
May supervise, train and evaluate staff and or contracted crews; determines work assignments and priorities and participates in personnel and contractor selection.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in range, agriculture, natural resources, or a related field as determined by the department head at the time of recruitmentANDone year of related field experience for a municipality, county, state or federal agency, non-governmental organization, groups or individual/private entity.
(Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)
OR:
Four years with Pima County in a Range and Agricultural Specialist, Natural Resources Specialist or related position as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):
Minimum one (1) year experience as the primary manager of beef cattle and/or horse herds in a semi-arid environment over thousands of acres, including assessing cattle nutrition, managing breeding and calving, planning and adapting grazing plans to meet conservation management goals on multiple use public lands, performing rangeland trend, condition, rangeland health assessments, and forage utilization and production, and using GPS or remote systems for cattle tracking and management.
Minimum one (1) year experience supervising and training volunteers, interns, staff, or contractors in safe work practices, technical skills, and procedures, as well as providing mentorship in horsemanship, low stress stockmanship, infrastructure repair and maintenance, rangeland management.
Minimum three (3) years experience training, riding and shoeing horses for ranch work with cattle; branding, vaccinating and castrating calves; doctoring cows and calves safely in remote rangeland and confined settings; coordinating and purchasing hay and supplemental feeds appropriate for cattle and horses and feeding/distributing feed to animals.
Minimum three (3) years experience in ranch infrastructure operation, repair, and maintenance, including fencing, water systems, solar and wind equipment, vehicle and livestock trailer operation on 4x4 rural roads, heavy equipment use for moving all sizes and formats of hay, feeding containers, other materials and performing occasional road maintenance, repair coordination, remote housing upkeep, and managing complex capital projects.
Minimum one (1) year experience in coordinating ranch education programs, including developing content, planning and leading events with staff and partners, and instructing youth and other participants.
Minimum two (2) years of organizational, administrative, and technical experience, including maintaining detailed records of cow herd health data, grazing/pasture use planning, materials, equipment and service history, safety data sheets for materials kept on job sites, and tracking outside entity requests; preparing reports related to budgets, expenditures, and revenue; and using Microsoft Office Suite, ArcGIS Online, and shared drive systems for scheduling, reporting, mapping, and file management.
Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination.
