    Job Description

    The Reading Intervention IA II teaches reading skills focusing on accelerating students to higher reading levels. Instruction can be inside or outside of the regular classroom, under the direction of a certified classroom teacher. The Reading Intervention IA II conducts benchmark and progress monitoring assessments that guide instructional practices in the classroom and schoolwide.

    Number of working days: 192 days

    Salary/rate of pay: On the Instructional Assistant Pay Scale (see below)

    Essential Functions:
    • Tutors individual or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the designated program; provide and utilize intensive methods of reinforcement of the lesson plans in accordance with specialized program guidelines; monitor and oversee student drills, practices and assignments
    • Assists instructional personnel with the presentation of learning materials and follow up activities, individually or in small groups of students
    • Prepares and assists in the set up and preparation of learning activities for use with students
    • Set up work areas and displays, operate computers and audio-visual equipment and prepare and duplicate instructional materials; confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs
    • Continues with instructional program in absence of teacher
    • Performs a variety of behavior management and behavior shaping functions
    • Reports progress regarding student performance and behavior
    • Prepares and maintains program-related records including testing, evaluation or instructional materials as required; maintains the confidentially of student records and information to established guidelines
    • Uses positive reinforcement strategies and other techniques to assist students in the development of appropriate behavior and an appreciation of human diversity
    • Assists in maintaining and orderly and positive learning environment
    • Provide diagnostic assessments as directed by Reading Intervention Teacher

    Work Environment:
    • Classroom Environment: This role often works in classrooms where conditions can vary. This may include exposure to noise, varying levels of student engagement, and the need to adapt to changing circumstances.
    • Emotional Demands: Working with students can be emotionally demanding but also incredibly rewarding. Must remain patient, compassionate, and composed, even in challenging situations.
    • Collaboration: Regular interaction and collaboration with teachers, teaching assistants, therapists, and other professionals to support students effectively.
    • Professional Development: Ongoing learning and development to stay updated with best practices, behavior management techniques, and educational technology.
     
    Physical Demands:
    The role of a Reading Intervention Instructional Assistant II involves various physical demands due to the nature of working with students. These demands may include:
    • Mobility: Moving around a classroom, assisting students
    •  Lifting: Occasionally lifting and arranging classroom materials
    •  Sitting and Standing: Engaging with students, teachers, and activities while both sitting and standing for extended periods
    • Adapting to Student Needs: Quickly responding to unexpected situations, such as helping a student who is experiencing a behavioral challenge
     
    Safety Measures:
    • Safety Protocols: Following established safety protocols and guidelines to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of all students
    • Proper Techniques: Utilizing appropriate techniques for assisting students with physical disabilities or behavioral challenges to prevent injury to both students and staff
    • Health Considerations: Adhering to health and hygiene standards and being mindful of any allergies or medical conditions that students may have
     
    Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: This position can be full-time or part-time, depending on assignment, with expected hours varying based on the needs of the school.
    Travel: Minimal or none
    Required Education and Experience:
    • Associates Degree, 48 college educational units, or the ability to pass a paraprofessional exam
     
    Preferred Education and Experience:
    • Reading intervention
    • Montessori experience

    Creditable Service for Instructional Assistant
    Instructional Assistant Salary Scale allows for:
    - 1 step for every year of full time, full year, equivalent experience, max of 8 years
    Montessori Credits:
    -Montessori applies only to fully completed certificate programs from accredited Montessori training centers.
