TITLE: Reading Specialist

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be certified as a Reading Specialist by the State of Delaware Department of Education.
  • Dual certification in Special Education is desirable.
  • Master's degree or equivalent in reading or comparable area.
  • Minimum 3 years of classroom teaching experience.
  • Experience in administering, analyzing and interpreting standardized diagnostic assessments.
  • Thorough of tiered systems of intervention (Response to Intervention)
  • Excellent organizational and management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, facilitation, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.

REPORTS TO: School Principal (or Assistant Principal)

JOB GOAL: To provide services to administrators, counselors, teachers, parents and students in the area of basic, developmental and advanced reading including informal and/or standardized measures to diagnose the strengths and needs of individuals and/or groups. The Reading Specialist will also provide support for tiered levels of interventions (Response to Intervention).

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identified strengths and needs in the school wide reading program.
  • Provides reading intervention services to identified students.
  • Develops and demonstrates effective teaching strategies to meet the needs of all students.
  • Records and analyzes student progress using qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Assists administrators and teachers in planning, selection, and delivery of the school wide reading program.
  • Helps to develop ongoing assessment measures and interprets standardized test scores in relation to school objectives.
  • Serves as a resource to teachers in identifying student needs, adapting instructional techniques, and selecting appropriate materials.
  • Is a key contributor to the School Leadership Team.
  • Consult with parents and teachers regarding student progress in reading.
  • Supports the engagement of families and community in literacy based activities.
  • Assists in planning, organizing and conducting reading/language arts professional development of the school.
  • Works directly with students in the areas of developmental reading using appropriate interventions.
  • Works with teachers to plan, demonstrate, and team teach to deliver reading strategies to all students.
  • Provides assessment services in the area of reading diagnostics.
  • Interprets test scores and plans appropriate programs based on evaluation.
  • Other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside of the instructional day per the LFEA agreement.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten months.

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.

The following are conditions of employment for new employees:

  • Satisfactory criminal background check prior to being placed on payroll.
  • Satisfactory child protection registry check.
  • Mandatory direct deposit of pay
  • Documentation of Mantoux skin test results for entrance to school system.

Applicants are advised that a copy of the most recent evaluation will be requested if selected for an interview. The evaluation can be loaded as part of the application in advance.
