**The Department of Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology (TMMMP), JABSOM, University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), seeks an Assistant Professor in the field of Tropical Medicine to lead and support the Department's basic sciences, clinical and translational research in emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, and to support the teaching/mentoring mission of the JABSOM.

Assistant Professor - Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching: 20%
  • Teach credit courses in Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology, and relevant disciplines offered by the Department to undergraduate, graduate, and medical students
  • Serve as a mentor and advisor for undergraduate and graduate students, medical students, and residents.
Research: 60%
  • Participate in and support of existing infectious diseases research interests, while establishing/re-establishing own basic science, clinical or translational research program at JABSOM.
  • Relevant research interests in the Department include infectious disease pathogenesis, host-microbe interactions, infectious disease epidemiology and diagnostics, clinical trials, and vaccine development for viral diseases, including HIV, SARS-CoV-2, dengue, West Nile virus, Zika, Filovirus; for parasitic diseases: malaria, rat lungworm.
  • Collaborate with other principal investigators inside and outside the department engaged in various aspects of immunological and microbe-host interactions research.
  • Submit applications for extramural funding.
  • Present research findings or organize workshops at national and international conferences
  • Conduct and publish research work in leading scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles in the area of tropical medicine.
Service: 20%
  • Participate in Department's committees for graduate admissions, assessment and curriculum development and evaluation.
  • Participate in Department, School and University-wide committees, including serving on graduate committees, department and university committees, and the faculty senate.
  • Other scholarly activities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D., M.D., M.D./Ph.D., D.V.M. or other doctoral degree in the biosciences from a college or university of recognized standing.
  • At least three (3) years of post doctoral research experience.
  • Demonstrated ability in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Expertise in infectious diseases research with a strong research background as demonstrated by publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain extramural research funding.
  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement.
  • Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Board certified or an active candidate for board certification and eligible for Hawaii medical license.
  • Demonstrated experience in obtaining independent extramural research funding.
  • Research interest in emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.
  • Experience in BSL-3 pathogens, animal models of BSL-3 pathogens, host-pathogen interactions.
  • Experience in International research.
