Description

Real Time Crime Analyst performs duties and tasks in support of law enforcement activities in the Investigative Bureau of the Police Department. Assists officers and investigators with criminal research needs. Accesses servers and storage media to locate specific video footage for investigators and officers. Testifying in court when necessary. Answering phone calls for a variety of informational or technical issues and questions. Maintaining daily, weekly, or monthly operational reports. Duties will vary based on given assignment and will require day, evening, and night shift work



*The departmental hiring rate for this position is $66,496.75 annually*





Essential Functions





Essential functions include, but are not limited to:



+ Monitoring, operating, and interpreting multiple integrated computer and software systems that combine live camera feeds, computer aided dispatch and the police radio system. Uploading video to evidence repositories and creating supplemental incident reports.


+ Identify activity or behavior which necessitates a police response, such as criminal activity in progress, crowd

monitoring, and traffic accidents/congestion.


+ Observing calls for service in progress to provide additional information to responding units; monitoring the duties of officers to direct additional resources as needed. Maintain awareness of police units and calls for service to track evolving situations, identify possible suspects (e.g., locating suspect vehicles and/or fleeing suspects), and relay information when on-scene personnel are unable to do so.


+ Perform technology-based investigative work in real-time to support communications, dispatch of calls for service and the response to those calls by public safety units. Collects relevant information and make timely decisions central to police responses while working in a multifaceted technology driven environment.


+ Monitors camera systems and license plate readers relating to in progress situations and communicate with police resources utilizing police radios, phones, and the computer aided dispatch system.


+ Review archived camera feeds, license plate data and other digital evidence to assist detectives in solving crimes.


+ Other duties as assigned.






Education/Experience





Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operations, technical, or office processes. Knowledge is normally acquired through two years of college resulting in an Associate's degree or equivalent.







Retired police officer or considerable work in a law enforcement agency. Or at least two years of experience in the Public Safety fields of Police and/or Fire-Rescue, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


The preferred candidate will have experience and or some knowledge of the following:


+ Criminal theory and practice, police department organizational structure, reporting systems and protocols.


+ Policies, procedures, and organization functions of the City of Norfolk to include the police department.


+ Geographic and socioeconomic layout of the City of Norfolk.


+ Word processing and linking software.


+ Standard practices, materials, techniques, and equipment associated with criminal activity.

Work Location - 810 Union Street, Suite 808, Norfolk, Virginia 23510








Work Hours - 7 days a week, rotating 10-hour shift, 0700-1700/1500-0100/1700-0300 (subject to change)

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.


If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.





+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
