Department: Slitting / Coil Processing Reports To: Slitter Line Operator / Shift Supervisor FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly) Shift: [1st / 2nd / 3rd — rotating; overtime and weekend work as scheduled] Pay Range: [$XX.XX – $XX.XX per hour, plus shift differential]
Position Summary
The Recoiler Helper works at the exit end of the slitting line, assisting the Slitter Operator and Recoiler Operator in rewinding slit steel strip into finished coils that meet customer width, weight, and quality specifications. This role is responsible for recoiler arbor setup, threading and starting coils, monitoring strip quality and coil build during the run, and banding, tagging, and staging finished product for shipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Setup
  • Review the slit schedule, setup sheet, and customer order to confirm coil width, number of mults, coil weight, ID/OD, wrap direction, and packaging requirements.
  • Build the recoiler arbor: install and space separator discs, spacer rings, and rubber stripper rings per the setup sheet, verifying spacing with proper gauges.
  • Assist with knife, spacer, and shim changes on the slitter head and with tooling changes on the tension stand.
  • Set up and adjust the tension stand (felt pads, rollers, or overarm separator) as directed.
  • Verify scrap/edge-trim winders or choppers are set for the correct trim width.
  • Position exit coil car, turnstile, or unloading equipment for the run.
Line Operation
  • Thread strip ends onto the recoiler mandrel; set gripper slots, belt wrapper, or clamping devices and start the coil wrap.
  • Monitor coil build throughout the run for telescoping, dish, weaving, loose or crossed wraps, and edge alignment; alert the operator to correct tension, alignment, or tracking.
  • Inspect strip during the run for burrs, slivers, camber, edge wave, scratches, coil breaks, dents, and dimensional variance; stop the line and notify the operator or supervisor when defects appear.
  • Take and record width, gauge, and burr measurements at required intervals using micrometers, tape, calipers, and go/no-go gauges.
  • Watch the scrap winder or chopper and clear jams safely; keep the scrap pit and line area clear.
  • Assist with coil changes at the entry end (uncoiler) as needed, including banding removal and threading.
Finished Coil Handling
  • Band and strap finished coils using steel or plastic strapping, seals, tensioners, and edge protectors per packaging standards.
  • Remove separator discs and spacers; strip completed coils from the arbor.
  • Apply coil tags, labels, and identification; verify heat numbers and lot traceability against paperwork.
  • Wrap, skid, and package coils per customer requirements (VCI paper, stretch wrap, wood skids, eye-to-sky or eye-to-side).
  • Move and stage coils to designated locations using overhead crane with C-hook or coil lifter, or forklift with coil ram.
  • Record production data: coil numbers, weights, footage, scrap, downtime, and quality checks.
Safety and Housekeeping
  • Follow all lockout/tagout procedures before clearing jams, changing tooling, or entering guarded areas.
  • Wear all required PPE at all times, including cut-resistant gloves and sleeves, safety glasses or face shield, hearing protection, and metatarsal safety boots.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area; perform end-of-shift cleanup, scrap removal, and basic operator-level maintenance and lubrication.
  • Report unsafe conditions, near misses, and equipment problems immediately.
  • Participate in shift handoff communication and safety meetings.
Other
  • Cross-train on recoiler operator, uncoiler, and packaging positions as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Operator or Supervisor.
Qualifications
Required
  • High school diploma or GED, or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to read and understand work orders, setup sheets, tape measures, micrometers, and calipers.
  • Basic math skills including fractions, decimals, and unit conversion.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and safety procedures precisely.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and rotating shifts as required.
Preferred
  • 6 months to 2 years of experience in a steel service center, coil processing, metal stamping, or similar manufacturing environment.
  • Prior experience on a slitting line, cut-to-length line, or with coil handling equipment.
  • Current or ability to obtain overhead crane and forklift certification.
  • Familiarity with steel grades, gauge tolerances, and common coil defects.
  • Experience with an ERP/production tracking system for entering production data.
Physical Requirements
  • Stand and walk on concrete for the full shift (8–12 hours).
  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs; occasionally up to 75 lbs with assistance.
  • Repeatedly bend, stoop, squat, kneel, reach overhead, and climb stairs or platforms.
  • Handle separator discs, spacers, banding, and tooling with sustained grip strength.
  • Sufficient vision (with correction) to inspect strip surfaces and read gauges and tags.
  • Sufficient hearing (with protection) to respond to alarms, horns, and verbal direction in a high-noise environment.
