Position Summary
The Recoiler Helper works at the exit end of the slitting line and assists the Slitter Operator and Recoiler Operator with rewinding slit steel strips into finished coils that meet customer width, weight, and quality specifications.
This position is responsible for setting up the recoiler arbor, threading and starting coils, monitoring strip quality and coil formation, and banding, tagging, and staging finished products for shipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Setup
Review the slit schedule, setup sheet, and customer order to confirm coil width, number of mults, coil weight, inner and outer diameter, wrap direction, and packaging requirements.
Build the recoiler arbor by installing and spacing separator discs, spacer rings, and rubber stripper rings according to the setup sheet.
Verify spacing using the proper gauges.
Assist with knife, spacer, and shim changes on the slitter head.
Assist with tooling changes on the tension stand.
Set up and adjust felt pads, rollers, or the overarm separator as directed.
Verify that scrap and edge trim winders or choppers are set for the correct trim width.
Position the exit coil car, turnstile, or unloading equipment for the production run.
Line Operation
Thread strip ends onto the recoiler mandrel.
Set gripper slots, belt wrappers, or clamping devices and begin the coil wrap.
Monitor coil formation throughout the run for telescoping, dish, weaving, loose or crossed wraps, and edge alignment.
Notify the operator when tension, alignment, or tracking adjustments are needed.
Inspect the strip for burrs, slivers, camber, edge wave, scratches, coil breaks, dents, and dimensional differences.
Stop the line and notify the operator or supervisor when defects are found.
Take and record width, gauge, and burr measurements at required intervals.
Use micrometers, tape measures, calipers, and go no go gauges.
Monitor the scrap winder or chopper and safely clear jams.
Keep the scrap pit and production line area clean and clear.
Assist with coil changes at the entry end when needed, including band removal and threading.
Finished Coil Handling
Band and strap finished coils using steel or plastic strapping, seals, tensioners, and edge protectors according to packaging standards.
Remove separator discs and spacers.
Remove completed coils from the arbor.
Apply coil tags, labels, and identification.
Verify heat numbers and lot traceability against the paperwork.
Wrap, skid, and package coils according to customer requirements.
Packaging may include VCI paper, stretch wrap, wood skids, eye to sky positioning, or eye to side positioning.
Move and stage coils in designated locations using an overhead crane with a coil hook or coil lifter, or a forklift with a coil ram.
Record production information including coil numbers, weights, footage, scrap, downtime, and quality checks.
Safety and Housekeeping
Follow all lockout tagout procedures before clearing jams, changing tooling, or entering guarded areas.
Wear all required personal protective equipment at all times.
Required equipment may include cut resistant gloves and sleeves, safety glasses or a face shield, hearing protection, and metatarsal safety boots.
Maintain a clean and organized work area.
Complete end of shift cleaning, scrap removal, basic maintenance, and lubrication.
Report unsafe conditions, near misses, and equipment problems immediately.
Participate in shift handoff communication and safety meetings.
Additional Responsibilities
Cross train in recoiler operator, uncoiler, and packaging positions as directed.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Operator or Supervisor.
Qualifications
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.
Ability to read and understand work orders, setup sheets, tape measures, micrometers, and calipers.
Basic math skills including fractions, decimals, and unit conversions.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and safety procedures.
Willingness to work overtime and weekends as required.
