The Position
The City of San Leandro is seeking an innovative Recreation Coordinator to grow and enhance youth recreation programs for children, teens, and families. This is an exciting opportunity for a creative professional who enjoys developing new programs, recruiting outstanding instructors and contractors, building community partnerships, and creating exceptional recreation experiences that enrich our community.
Under general supervision, plans, coordinates, schedules, assigns, supervises, and participates in the work of staff responsible for supporting the implementation of recreation programming, Citywide special events, and maintaining the safe operation of recreation facilities, sites, programs, and services; coordinates and schedules assigned facilities, services, operations, and activities with those of other City departments, contractors, community partners, and outside agencies and ensures safety and compliance with all requirements and City standards; prepares and monitors assigned recreation budgets and financial reports; provides staff assistance to management; and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This class exercises independent judgment on diverse and specialized recreation programs, facility, and parks usage and event coordination with accountability and ongoing decision-making responsibilities associated with the work. Incumbents are responsible for planning, organizing, supervising, reviewing, and evaluating the work of staff and for providing technical support to higher level supervisory and management staff in a variety of areas. Performance of the work requires the use of independence, initiative, and discretion within established guidelines. This class is distinguished from the Recreation Supervisor in that the latter is the full supervisory-level class and has overall program, budgetary, and administrative responsibility for multiple recreation activities and facilities or a comprehensive recreational program.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED
Exercises direct supervision over recreation leaders, specialists, facilities, and parks support staff, and volunteers. Receives general direction from assigned management and supervisory personnel.

Qualifications
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION GUIDELINES
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would most likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Equivalent to an associate degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in recreation, education, social services, social sciences, business or public administration, or a related field.
Experience: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience coordinating recreation programs or community facility operations, events, resources, and programming including lead or supervisory experience.
