The City of Renton Parks and Recreation Department is excited to announce we are recruiting for a Recreation Leader 4 to support our After School and Teen Programs at the Highlands Neighborhood Center. this position supports a variety of youth and teen recreation opportunities including the STREAM After School Program, Youth Council Meetings, Volunteer Projects, Family Engagement Events, and Evening Recreation Activities.

As a Recreation Leader 4, you will assist the Recreation Coordinator and other City staff with planning, preparing, and implementing engaging recreational and enrichment opportunities for youth and teens. Activities may include STREAM-based instruction, leadership development, games, arts and crafts, special events, volunteer projects, family nights, and community-building activities. This position is also responsible for assisting with program set-up, take-down, facility security, transportation of participants, and general cleaning of the Highlands Neighborhood Center.

This position is an ongoing supplemental position with a short-term schedule of up to 40 hours per week during the fall season (September - December), transitioning to a reduced part-time schedule in 2027 based on program needs.

Hourly Rate - Recreation Leader 4: $29.00 per hour

Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Experience, and other Requirements:

  • Be at least age 21 years of age (required to transport participants)
  • Valid drivers license and successful passing of a required driving record check
  • Successful passing of a required background check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with youth and teens in recreation, education, after-school, or community-based settings
  • Experience facilitating youth leadership or teen engagement programs preferred
  • Knowledge of recreational programming, behavior management, and positive youth development practices
  • Ability to safely operate City vehicles for transportation of program participants
  • CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain within required timeframe

SUPERVISION:

Reports To: Recreation Coordinator, Recreation Supervisor and/or Designee

Supervises: None

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide support to, and collaborate with, Recreation Coordinator and other City staff to assist with planning, preparing, and implementing youth and teen programs.
  • Provide daily activity oversight and support for the STREAM After School Program.
  • Facilitate and support bi-monthly meetings for the Renton Youth Council.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of volunteer projects, family and kids night events, teen engagement activities, and community programs.
  • Transport participants for after-school programming, field trips, and program-related activities as assigned.
  • Lead, instruct, and engage participants using excellent citizenship, leadership, inclusivity, and sportsmanship.
  • Provide participants with opportunities to build social skills, leadership abilities, teamwork, and confidence through recreational programming.
  • Understand, explain, and uphold program and facility expectations.
  • Ensure program and facility rules, policies, and procedures are followed; maintain and enforce safety standards.
  • Responsible for reporting participant behavioral problems, incidents, or safety concerns to appropriate staff and supervisors.
  • Maintain attendance records, activity reports, transportation logs, and facility documentation as required.
  • Provide a positive attitude toward participants, families, volunteers, and staff; encourage and serve as a positive role model.
  • Assist with coordination and support of volunteers and supplemental staff as assigned.
  • Support all evening activities and operations at the Highlands Neighborhood Center.
  • Ensure proper use, care, cleaning, and storage of program equipment, vehicles, and supplies.
  • Keep program areas tidy, organized, safe, and welcoming to participants and patrons.
  • Maintain communication with staff, participants, parents/guardians, and community partners as needed.
  • Responsible for assisting with program set-up, take-down, security measures, and general cleaning of the facility.
  • May work in more than one assignment within the department.
  • Administer first aid as needed.

  • Ability to safely perform job tasks in a variety of park and non-park settings.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds on occasion.
  • Driving a City vehicle, and transporting patrons, is a requirement for some positions.
  • Frequent communication with City employees and customers.
  • Work various schedules including mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
