The City of Pasadenas Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department is seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals with a passion to work with youth in a recreation type setting by providing general assistance and support to assigned recreation program and activities; assists in providing on-site supervision of recreation program and activity participants; and performs a variety of general administrative tasks in support of the Afterschool Program. These are part-time positions working up to 19 hours per week.

The ideal candidate will possess prior experience in assisting higher level staff in the oversight, instruction, and implementation of recreation/education programs and activities. This is an excellent opportunity to work with youth from our local community and to serve as a positive role model in shaping future generations.

Afterschool Adventures Program

Recreation Leaders must be available to work Monday from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm and Tuesday through Friday 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm or Monday-Friday from 6:45 am to 8:45 am.

Essential Functions

  • With direction of supervisor leads and organizes recreation programs and/or special activities for all age groups at a community center or at a large playground or park area.
  • Conducts special assignments during city-wide special events.
  • Staff seasonal camps during district holiday breaks.
  • May be assigned as leader or serve as the only leader at a center, playground, park or special activities and events involving extensive facilities, large events, etc.
  • Instructs in various games and interprets rules of play.
  • Determines and arranges for supplies, equipment, and facilities needed for various program and activities.
  • Supervises the issuance, use, care and maintenance of recreation supplies and equipment assigned to center, playground, or activity.
  • Takes necessary precautions to ensure the safety of participants and spectators and renders first-aid as needed.
  • Cooperates with staff employees in promoting the total recreation program at an assigned location.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records of attendance, time reports, accident reports, activities, progress reports, and meets all deadlines.
  • Effectively interact with the public and City staff, set up and take down of equipment for programs and special events.
  • Responds to emergency situations and administer first aid and CPR as necessary.
  • Get from one location to another while doing business.
  • Coaches and umpires organized games and sports activities.
  • Assists in the encouragement of participation and good sportsmanship.
  • Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner.
  • Provides information within the area of assignment.
  • Knowledgeable of general sports and recreational activities and programs including techniques, rules and equipment used in various sports, games and special events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualification Guidelines

Minimum qualifications:

  • 50 hours or more of paid and/or volunteer experience in recreation, physical education, or related field.

Desired qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in a college or university majoring in Recreation or a related field is desirable.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process may consist of any combination of online screening of training and experience evaluation, subject matter expert review and structured/department interview.

VACANCIES

There are currently several vacancies in the Afterschool Adventures Program. Recreation, and Community Services department. The resulting eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill this vacancy and similar vacancies in the future. This is an at-will position. These are part-time positions working up to 19 hours per week.

FICA Alternative Plan:

The City of Pasadena does not participate in Social Security. In lieu of Social Security, hourly employees who are not already members of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) are automatically enrolled in the FICA Alternative plan administered by Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) upon date of hire. Employees contribute 7.5% of the gross earnings on a pre-tax basis to the plan.

Existing CalPERS members*

The City of Pasadena contracts with the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) to offer a defined benefits program for eligible employees.

"New" CalPERS members are subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and receive the following benefit formula: 2% at 62

  • Please note that City Service Workers are excluded from the Citys contract with CalPERS. Thus, existing CalPERS members also will be enrolled in the FICA alternative plan administered by PARS instead.

Health Insurance:

The City contracts with CalPERS to offer several comprehensive health plans that include Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) to hourly employees who work at least 30 hours a week.
