    Job Description

    Recreation Leader - Athletics

    The Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism is seeking an enthusiastic and customer-focused Recreation Leader with a background in athletic operations to support youth and adult sports programs, community activities, special events, and facility operations throughout the City of Chesapeake. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with the community and creating safe, positive, and engaging recreational experiences for participants of all ages.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Providing excellent customer service to participants, coaches, volunteers, officials, spectators, and community members.
    • Supporting the operation of youth and adult athletic programs, including basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball, football, field hockey, cheerleading, and other recreational activities.
    • Assisting with leagues, tournaments, registrations, team organization, and program administration.
    • Supervising and supporting volunteers and contracted program staff.
    • Monitoring facilities, fields, and courts to promote safety, enforce rules, and maintain a positive environment.
    • Assisting with athletic field setup, equipment management, facility operations, and event preparation.
    • Responding to participant concerns, incidents, and operational needs in a professional manner.
    • Completing reports and communicating maintenance, safety, and program needs to supervisors.
    • Other duties as assigned

    Required Qualifications

    VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

    Requires instruction that is sufficient for satisfactory job performance .

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

    In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of one month of full-time equivalent experience.

    SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

    Requires CPR and First Aid certification within the first year of employment. May require a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Must have the ability to exercise independent judgment; effectively communicate with the public; and resolve conflicts during competitive league programs.

    Must have ability to express ideas clearly, both orally and in writing; ability to use a telephone; read and interpret rules and regulations.
