Summary Description
The Recreation Leader is an entry-level classification in the Community Services Department. Under direct supervision, the Recreation Leader assists with the coordination and implementation of recreation, leisure, educational, and community services programs, classes, activities, special events, youth sports, summer camps, virtual programs, and facility operations.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives guidance and direction from the Recreation Specialist and/or the Recreation Coordinator and supervision from the Recreation Manager, or designee. May provide basic direction to program participants, volunteers, or activity assistants as assigned.

Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Basic principles, practices, and concepts of community services and recreation.
Basic recreation activities, including sports, games, crafts, music, dance, outdoor activities, and general play skills.
Basic methods and practices for conducting recreation programs and activities.
Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
Basic customer service practices.
Department programs, services, schedules, policies, and procedures.
Basic recordkeeping and administrative practices.
Proper use and care of recreation equipment and supplies.
Ability to:
Assist with and conduct recreation, leisure, educational, and community services programs and activities.
Plan, organize, and supervise assigned activities within established guidelines.
Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Gain and maintain the enthusiasm and participation of individuals and groups.
Provide courteous and effective customer service.
Establish and maintain positive working relationships with individuals and groups.
Interpret and follow departmental policies, procedures, laws, rules, and safety requirements.
Recognize routine program, safety, facility, and customer service issues and take appropriate action or seek assistance.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Maintain accurate records and complete routine reports and forms.
Use computers, office equipment, and related software applications.
Work effectively as part of a team.
Work independently on assigned tasks as experience and proficiency are demonstrated.
Safely operate, store, and care for recreation equipment and supplies.
Experience, Education and Licenses
Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the eleventh grade, or seventeen years of age.
Experience:
Some experience working with groups, children, youth, sports, recreation activities, community programs, or in a customer service environment is desirable.
License or Certificate:
Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License and maintain possession of such license during the course of employment.

The position requires supervising, interacting, and playing with children on field trips and at City facilities, such as the pool, recreation center, gymnasium, playgrounds, and parks. The position may require prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. Additionally, the position requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in retrieving and entering data using a computer keyboard. Near and far vision is required in order to read work related documents and use the computer. Acute hearing is required for working with children and when providing phone and personal service. The position requires lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Incumbent must be willing to work shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
