PURPOSE
The purpose of this classification is to serve as a recreation leader, coach, assistant, instructor, and/or official for various recreational activities under general supervision. Employees in this role are primarily responsible for community center programming, providing after-school support, and engaging with youth. Assignments within the gymnastics program will be based on knowledge, experience, and operational needs. Responsibility may include recreational instruction, developmental and competitive team coaching, clinics, camps, athlete evaluations, choreography assistance, administrative duties, lesson planning, mentoring staff, maintaining an orderly environment, and performing other related tasks as required.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, & TRAINING
High school diploma or GED equivalent; supplemented by six-nine (6-9) months previous experience that demonstrates ability to work effectively with a targeted age group and/or recreational activity. Candidates who possess an associate's degree in physical education, sports management, and child development are highly preferred. Experience in gymnastic programs and competitive team sports is preferred. A combination of education and progressive responsible experience may be considered.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
May require additional training and/or certification contingent upon the targeted age group and/or recreational activity as assigned (i.e., water safety training; first aid certification).
NOTE: This position requires a drug screen. If applicant did not receive drug screening upon initial hire with the City, applicant will be required to submit to drug screening prior to accepting this position.
JOB DESCRIPTION
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Assist with daily recreation center operations.
Advises, coaches, assists, instructs special interest recreational activities such as competitive team activities, gymnastics, athletic leagues, arts and crafts, etc.
Plans, organizes, conducts, officiates and supervises programs or activities for designated activity or age group (i.e., pre-school, school age, teen age, adults, senior citizens, disabled); attends meetings regarding programs and activities.
Maintains routine records related to activities and functions as assigned (i.e., accident reports, safety reports, daily activities, maintaining ledgers, and inventory of equipment).
Functions in a lead capacity in performing routine general maintenance work in caring for assigned facility and/or recreation areas (i.e., washing work surfaces, cleaning floors, cleaning furniture, washing lavatories, pickup up debris, raking leaves, sweeping courts, replacing nets).
Monitors safe conditions for participants, spectators, and the public.
Administers basic first aid when indicated.
Evaluates equipment and material needs and ensures sufficient supplies of disposable items are available for public use.
Coordinate emergency preparedness and response training

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate to highly physical effort typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and running that may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12 to 40 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination and oral communications ability.
Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, toxic agents, violence, and/or disease.

The work performance of supervisory personnel of the City of Daytona Beach is routinely evaluated according to the performance criteria outlined herein:
Knowledge of Job: Has considerable knowledge of the methods, policies and procedures of the City of Daytona Beach as such pertain to the performance of the essential duties of the Recreation Leader. Has considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of supervising, planning, organizing, conducting, instructing, advising, coaching, and/or assisting with gymnastics, one or more major recreational activities/programs with persons of all ages and abilities within the community. Has considerable knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards, and regulations pertaining to the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. Has considerable knowledge of the organization of the Department and of related departments and agencies. Clearly understands the occupational hazards and safety precautions required to perform the essential functions of the work. Has considerable knowledge of terminology and related professional languages used within the Department as such pertain to work responsibilities.
