Job Description

Join the Parks, Recreation and Tourism team! We're looking for an energetic, customer-focused individual who enjoys working with people of all ages and backgrounds to help create safe, welcoming, and engaging recreational experiences for the Chesapeake community.

As a Recreation Leader, you'll support the daily operations of community centers, recreational programs, facility rentals, and special events. From youth programs and athletics to senior activities, childcare, water playgrounds, and programs for individuals with disabilities, every day offers something different.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver outstanding customer service and assist participants, families, and visitors with programs, registrations, memberships, rentals, and general inquiries.
  • Support daily community center operations, including opening and closing facilities, facility setup and breakdown, basic housekeeping, inspections, and monitoring participant safety.
  • Assist with recreational programs, special events, childcare, athletics, and other activities while ensuring a positive experience for all participants.
  • Set up and take down tables, chairs, recreational equipment, bleachers, and other event materials.
  • Resolve participant concerns professionally and communicate issues to supervisors as needed.

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Requires a high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in recreation, physical education, or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of one month of full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Requires CPR and First Aid certification within the first year of employment. May require a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards..

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • This position requires a valid driver's license. A learner's permit is not considered a valid driver's license*

Must have ability to express ideas clearly, both orally and in writing; ability to use a telephone; read and interpret rules and regulations.

Will be required to work at City special events and activities as program support staff.

Possess positive customer service skills and abilities.

Ability to: independently lift chairs and tables; set up volleyball standards and basketball goals; move portable bleachers; effectively communicate with public and staff; complete written forms and reports; lift 40 pounds; work alone; use a computer.
