Job Description

Do you enjoy outdoor activities, summer camps, and nature or environmental programs? Are you looking for a fun and rewarding part-time opportunity? If so, this position may be the perfect fit for you!

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism is seeking an enthusiastic individual who loves working in an outdoor setting and has a passion for outdoor programs. This position primarily supports the department's outdoor programming, held at various parks and recreation facilities throughout the city. The role also assists with youth programs and special events citywide, including Summer Campsand other day camp programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise children ages 6-12 in camp programs, including activities such as canoeing, hiking, nature exploration, crafts, and science projects.
  • Plan, lead, and participate in age-appropriate activities, primarily in an outdoor setting.
  • Engage with participants in both active and passive games, ensuring fair play and adherence to safety rules.
  • Maintain program and participant safety, including setup, takedown, and cleanup of activity areas.
  • Manage and organize equipment inventory, ensuring proper use, storage, and condition.
  • Provide excellent customer service in alignment with the City's Customer Service Initiative, responding to participant and parent inquiries and communicating program details.
  • Assist with program registrations and payment collection.
  • Respond to accidents or injuries and administer basic first aid as needed.
  • Address and resolve conflicts among participants calmly and professionally; report behavior issues to management and parents as appropriate.
  • Complete and submit timely reports on incidents, accidents, and equipment needs.
  • Inspect facilities and play areas for safety and cleanliness, enforcing rules and maintaining an organized environment.
  • Participate actively in field trips and outdoor activities such as hiking, boating, fishing, disc golf, kickball, softball, volleyball, and other recreation programs or special events.

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Requires instruction that is sufficient for satisfactory job performance.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of one month of full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Requires CPR and First Aid certification within the first year of employment. May require a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards. .

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • General knowledge of recreational activities, including water-based programs, athletics, arts and crafts, and outdoor games.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to safety.
  • Physical ability to participate in and lead recreational activities, including lifting and setting up tables, chairs, and equipment.
  • Ability to maintain a positive, energetic attitude while engaging with children and families in a variety of outdoor settings.

Will be required to work at City special events and activities as program support staff.

Possess positive customer service skills and abilities.

Previous work experience as a camp counselor, childcare provider, independent contractor or teacher
